Recovery Gear

Recovery gear for getting unstuck, including MAXTRAX traction boards, Agency 6 shackle blocks and billet winch shackles, Krazy Beaver shovels, D-ring sets, straps and complete recovery kits. Pick shackles and D-rings by rated capacity and thread size, and match them to your vehicle's recovery points and winch rope before heading out.

What's in Recovery Gear

This is the hands-on end of recovery: traction boards, recovery kits, shackles and D-rings, straps, ratchet straps and jacks. The biggest groups are recovery kits, traction boards and shackles and D-rings.

Agency 6 leads with shackle blocks and billet winch shackles, followed by MAXTRAX boards, Krazy Beaver Tools shovels, MotoTote and DMOS. Nearly everything is universal, though some lift shackle kits are listed by vehicle.

How to choose

Start with how you get stuck. Sand, snow and mud call for traction boards and a shovel, while a rock or a ditch calls for a rated recovery point, shackles and a proper strap or rope.

  • Match rated capacity to your vehicle's weight, and check the working load rating, not just the breaking strength.
  • Match shackle pin size and thread to the recovery points on your bumper or frame. A recovery points and D-rings check helps here.
  • Never recover from a tow hook, ball or a bumper not rated for it.
  • Cam buckle and ratchet tie-downs secure cargo and are not recovery gear.

A full kit is a good start if you're new, and you can add traction boards or shackles and D-rings later. If you have a winch, add winch components too.

Recovery Gear FAQs

What size shackle do I need for my truck?

Match the shackle to the weight of your vehicle and to the opening on your recovery point. Look at the working load limit stamped on the shackle or listed on the page, and check that the pin fits the hole. If you can't tell, call us with your vehicle.

Are traction boards worth carrying?

They are one of the most useful tools for sand, snow and mud, since you can often self-recover without a second vehicle. Make sure you have a way to mount them, such as a [traction board mount](/collections/traction-board-mounts).

Can I use a tow strap for off-road recovery?

A tow strap is meant for a steady pull and doesn't stretch much. Recovery straps and ropes are designed to stretch and store energy, which is gentler on both vehicles. Never use a chain or a strap with a damaged section.

What should be in a basic recovery kit?

Contents vary by kit, but common pieces are a recovery strap, a pair of shackles, gloves and a bag. Most people add a shovel and traction boards. Check what each kit includes on the product page.

Do I need a Hi-Lift jack?

Not for most trips. It's a versatile tool for lifting and winching, but it takes training to use safely, and it needs a solid point on your vehicle and a good mount.
