Drivetrain Protection

Skid plates generally shield the engine, transmission, and underbody, while drivetrain protection targets the driveline specifically — differential covers, fuel tank skids, transfer-case guards, and driveshaft protection. There's overlap, and a full build uses both. Think of skid plates as the flat armor under the powertrain and drivetrain protection as the pieces guarding the round, vulnerable components that stick down into rock territory.

A heavy-duty diff cover is worth it if you wheel technical terrain or run larger tires that raise ring-and-pinion loads. It protects the ring gear from rock strikes that can crack a cast cover and drain your gear oil on the trail, and better covers add fluid capacity and a machined fill for easier service. For mild dirt-road and overland use, the factory cover is usually adequate.

Steel takes repeated hard hits and is easy to field-repair, while aluminum saves weight your suspension and payload will appreciate. High-contact rock crawling favors steel where impacts are frequent and direct; weight-conscious overland builds often choose aluminum for larger flat skids. Many builds mix the two — steel on the diff and transfer case, aluminum on the broad underbody plates.

Most drivetrain armor is vehicle-specific and bolts to factory mounts, so fitment follows your year, make, and model rather than your lift height. Differential covers are matched to the axle and ring gear size, so confirm your axle before ordering. If you've swapped axles or run aftermarket gears, check clearance and bolt pattern against the cover's listed application.
