What size winch do I need for my truck?
A common rule is a rating of about one and a half times the loaded weight of the vehicle. Weigh your truck with gear and pick a winch with margin above that.
Who needs a 15,000 lb winch?
Mostly loaded 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks. Using the 1.5x rule, a 15,000 lb winch suits a vehicle around 10,000 lb loaded. For most half-tons and midsize trucks, a 9,000 to 12,000 lb winch is enough and weighs less.
Should I choose steel or synthetic winch rope?
Synthetic is lighter and safer if it fails, but it needs protection from abrasion and sun. Steel is tougher and heavier. The fairlead has to match the line type.
Can I mount a winch on a stock bumper?
Only if the bumper is rated and designed for it. Most stock bumpers are not, so you need a winch-ready bumper or a mounting plate for your model.
What is the difference between 12V and 24V winches?
They match the system voltage of the vehicle. Most trucks are 12V, while 24V models are for heavy-duty vehicles with a 24V system.
