Lift a truck past about three inches and the factory upper control arms run out of ball-joint travel — caster, alignment, and CV angle all suffer. Aftermarket upper and lower arms fix that geometry: uniball or heavy-duty ball-joint uppers restore caster, clear taller coilovers, and stop premature wear. Choosing Control Arms for a Lifted Truck

A control arm's job is to locate the wheel and keep suspension and steering geometry correct through travel. Lift the truck and those angles change, which is why arms are one of the first suspension components people upgrade after height. Match the arm to your lift: mild levels may keep stock arms, three-inch-plus builds usually need uppers for caster and clearance, and long-travel setups want arms designed around the specific coilover. Buy for your measured lift height, not the box's maximum rating.

What to Upgrade Alongside Arms

Arms rarely fix a ride problem alone. Reset your bump stops to the new travel, refresh worn bushings, and check the sway bars if body roll changed with the lift. Filter by year, make, and model so the arms clear your coilover reservoir and retain proper ball-joint angle, then align the truck to spec before you load it.

Do I need upper control arms for my lift?

You need upper control arms once your lift exceeds roughly three inches, or any time you install taller coilovers that need clearance. Below that, factory arms usually retain enough ball-joint travel and correct caster. Above it, aftermarket UCAs restore alignment specs, add caster for on-center stability, and clear larger shock bodies. If your alignment shop can't dial in caster after a lift, arms are the fix.

Uniball or ball-joint upper control arms?

Uniballs handle more angle and abuse but transmit noise and need periodic service; ball-joint arms are quieter, sealed, and better for daily-driven and overland trucks. High-speed desert and hard technical wheeling favor uniballs. Long-distance loaded touring usually favors a greasable or rebuildable ball joint. Many arms offer both, so choose by how the truck is actually used.

Will control arms fix death wobble or alignment problems?

Control arms fix alignment problems caused by lift geometry, but death wobble is usually worn joints, a loose track bar, or steering play — not the arms themselves. New arms restore caster and camber range so a shop can align the truck correctly. If you have vibration, inspect ball joints, tie rods, and bushings first, then align.
