Lighting is the most common first mod on a Toyota 4Runner, and also the easiest one to order wrong, because fitment splits hard by generation and by model year inside a generation. This guide walks through headlights, tail lights, fog lights and ditch lights for the 4th gen (2003–2009), the 5th gen before and after the 2014 facelift, and the 6th gen (2025 and newer), using only parts we carry and only the years the makers list.

Short answer: Start with your model year. On a 2010–2013 4Runner the full LED headlight swap is the Morimoto XB Hybrid; on 2014–2024 it is the XB Evo or XB Evo Hybrid. Morimoto XB Gen II tail lights fit all 2010–2024 trucks. For fogs and ditch lights, buy brackets and kits listed for your exact years, since 2003–2009, 2010–2013, 2014–2024 and 2025+ each use different parts.

Start here: which 4Runner do you have

Every part below is listed for a year range, and those ranges do not always match the generation breaks. Here is how the lineup splits:

  • 4th gen, 2003–2009. Halogen headlights, with a low beam bulb change after 2005.
  • 5th gen, 2010–2013. Pre-facelift front end with its own headlights and A-pillar brackets.
  • 5th gen, 2014–2024. Facelift front end. Some parts stop at 2023, so 2024 owners should read titles closely.
  • 6th gen, 2025 and newer. All-new truck; several kits split by trim.

Trims matter only where a listing says so. We call those out below. If you are building the whole truck, our 4Runner overland build guide covers the rest of the list.

4th gen 4Runner lighting (2003–2009)

Headlights

ORACLE makes S3 LED conversion bulbs sized for each factory socket: the 9006 S3 low beam kit for 2003–2005, the H11 S3 low beam kit for 2006–2020, and the 9005 S3 high beam kit for 2003–2020. ORACLE rates the S3 at 3,200 lumens of 6,000K white light in a sealed, fanless body. For 2006–2009 trucks (including the 4Runner Sport), the ORACLE LED headlight halo kit adds white halo rings inside your existing headlights; it is a DIY install that means opening the housings.

LED bulbs in housings built for halogen can change the beam pattern, and rules vary by state; check yours. Our LED vs halogen headlights guide goes deeper.

Fog lights

ORACLE lists 9006 fog conversion kits for 2003–2009, including the 9006 S3 fog kit.

Ditch lights

This is where the 4th gen has the most choice. The Morimoto 2Banger and 4Banger LED Ditch Light Systems (03–09) come with laser-cut 304 stainless brackets that bolt to existing A-pillar mounting points, with white or yellow pods. If you already own pods, the Morimoto 03–09 ditch light brackets are sold alone and Morimoto says they work with other brands. Cali Raised LED offers the Low Profile Ditch Light Brackets Kit for 2003–2009, and the KC HiLiTES pillar bracket set for 2002–2009 carries lights up to 6 inches but requires trimming the plastic cowl and does not work with KC Daylighter lights.

Tail lights and other lighting

We do not carry replacement tail light housings for the 4th gen. Bulb swaps are the route: an ORACLE 7443 LED brake bulb (listed 1996–2007), a T10 third brake light bulb (1993–2009) and T10 reverse bulbs (2001–2020). Note the 7443 listing ends at 2007, so a 2008–2009 owner should confirm the bulb first. Up front, Cali Raised LED makes a 32-inch lower bumper light bar kit for 2003–2009.

5th gen 4Runner lighting (2010–2024)

The 2014 facelift is the line that matters for headlights, fog kits and A-pillar brackets. Tail light fitment carries across the whole run.

Headlights: 2010–2013

The Morimoto XB Hybrid LED Headlights (10–13) replace the factory housings with a 3-inch Bi-LED projector rated at 3,200 raw lumens per side, LED daytime running lights and gunmetal bezels. They connect to the factory connectors and carry a five-year warranty. The 10–13 Headlight and Tail Light Combo adds XB tails.

Headlights: 2014–2024

Two Morimoto options share the same dual Bi-LED projectors:

  • XB Evo (14–24). Standard drivers listed as DOT / FMVSS108 compliant, plus a Frost-Free lens system (heating element and fans) for snow and ice.
  • XB Evo Hybrid (14–24). The same projectors with a white DRL and amber signals, DOT compliant, at a lower price point.

Both accept the Morimoto Supercharged Drivers (14–24), which Morimoto rates at 30–50% more output. The result is non-compliant, so treat them as off-road only. The 14–24 Headlight and Tail Light Combo pairs either headlight with XB tails.

Keeping the factory housings? ORACLE lists an H11 S3 low beam kit for 2014–2023 and the 9005 high beam kits up to 2020. Some later trucks shipped with factory LED headlights; if yours did, a bulb kit is not for you. Pull the bulb and look before ordering.

Tail lights

The Morimoto XB LED Tail Lights Gen II (10–24) are the one housing that fits the full 5th gen run. They use 3D light blades for brake and turn, add a reverse-sequential amber signal, offer an optional LED reverse light bar, come in smoked or red, and are listed as DOT and SAE compliant with a five-year warranty. We wrote up our own install in Morimoto XB Gen II tails on the 4Runner. For a lower-profile look on 2014–2024 trucks, the ORACLE Flush Style LED Tail Lights sit nearly flush with the body and add sequential turn signals; ORACLE says they plug into the factory harness with no splicing on most models.

For backing a trailer, the Baja S2 Sport Dual Reverse Light Kit (2010–24) mounts below the rear bumper.

Fog lights

The 5th gen has the widest fog choice, from bulbs to full SAE pods:

Ditch lights

Morimoto splits its A-pillar systems at the facelift: 4Banger system for 2010–2013, 4Banger system for 2014–2024, 2Banger versions for both, and brackets-only for both (14–24 brackets shown). Other options listed across 2010–2024 include the Cali Raised LED Low Profile Ditch Light Brackets Kit (brackets, pods and harness) and the KC HiLiTES ditch bracket set. The ORACLE A-pillar brackets with VEGA Series 2 spotlights bolt to factory hood hardware with no drilling, but they are listed for 2010–2023, not 2024. Spot or flood? Read ditch lights: spot vs flood.

Other lighting

On 2014–2024 trucks, the Morimoto XBG LED DRL Grille packs four 2Banger pods behind a TRD Pro-style fascia with amber DRL backlighting, listed for all 2014–2024 trims. Baja Designs grille bar kits are listed for 2014–2018 or 2014–2023 only. Morimoto mirror marker lights come in 2010–2013 and 2014+ versions. For the roof, see the KC HiLiTES Platform One rack with 360° lighting (2010–2024).

6th gen 4Runner lighting (2025 and newer)

We do not carry replacement headlight or tail light housings for the 6th gen yet. Fog, ditch, grille and rear lighting are covered, and much of it splits by trim.

Fog lights

Baja Designs builds separate OEM fog replacement kits for TRD Pro and Trailhunter trucks and for everything else. The S2 SAE kit for non-TRD Pro trucks and the S2 SAE kit for TRD Pro and Trailhunter are designed to meet SAE J583. The S2 Sport kits (non-TRD Pro and TRD Pro / Trailhunter) use four S2 Sports at 1,581 raw lumens each with splitter harnesses for the stock switch. Cali Raised LED also offers a Fog Light Replacement Kit for 2025+ rated at 7,000 lumens total.

Ditch lights

Baja Designs lists several A-pillar kits for 2025–2026, from the Squadron 2.0 Sport (3,200 lumens at 30W per light) to the Squadron 2.0 Pro (5,921 lumens at 65W per light), plus XL and LP4 versions. Each includes brackets, a toggle harness and hardware. Cali Raised LED makes a 2025+ Ditch Light Bracket Kit with pods and harness, and brackets alone.

What to check before you order

  • Exact year range in the title. Watch the edges: ORACLE A-pillar brackets stop at 2023, the ORACLE 7443 brake bulb stops at 2007, and some Baja grille kits stop at 2018.
  • Trim, where listed. 6th gen fog and grille kits split by TRD Pro and Trailhunter. The Cali Raised LED Lo Pro grille bar does not fit the Limited grille.
  • Bulb base. Pull the factory bulb and read it before buying a conversion kit, especially on 2014–2020 fogs where H11 and H16 listings overlap.
  • Street use vs off-road. Look for DOT, SAE or SAE J583 language on the listing. Supercharged drivers and many pods are off-road only. Rules vary by state; check yours.
  • Brackets vs complete kits. Several listings are brackets only.

Our suggested upgrade order

Our opinion; your use may change it.

  • 1. Headlights. You use them every night.
  • 2. Fog lights. They help in rain, snow and dust. Go SAE-rated for road use.
  • 3. Ditch lights. The first real off-road light. They light the trail edges your headlights miss.
  • 4. Tail and reverse lights. Easier backing and trailer hookups.
  • 5. Everything else. Grille lights, roof bars and markers.

Frequently asked questions

Do 2014–2024 4Runner headlights fit a 2010–2013 4Runner?

No. The front end changed with the 2014 facelift, and the headlight assemblies we carry are listed separately: the Morimoto XB Hybrid for 2010–2013, and the XB Evo and XB Evo Hybrid for 2014–2024. Buy by your model year.

Are Morimoto XB Evo 4Runner headlights street legal?

With the standard drivers, Morimoto lists the XB Evo as DOT / FMVSS108 compliant. The optional Supercharged drivers push output 30–50% higher and are non-compliant, so Morimoto intends them for off-road use.

What tail lights fit a 5th gen 4Runner?

The Morimoto XB LED Tail Lights (Gen II) are listed for 2010–2024, in smoked or red. The ORACLE Flush Style LED Tail Lights are listed for 2014–2024 only, so they are not a 2010–2013 option.

What fog light bulb does a 4Runner use?

ORACLE lists 9006 for 2003–2009 fog lights. For the 5th gen it lists both an H11 kit (2010–2020) and an H16 kit (2014–2023), so on a 2014–2020 truck pull the factory bulb and read the base before you order.

Do 4Runner ditch light brackets require drilling?

The Morimoto A-pillar brackets bolt to existing mounting points with no drilling. The KC HiLiTES brackets also use the OE bolt locations without drilling, but KC notes they require trimming the plastic cowl.

Will 5th gen ditch light brackets fit a 2025 4Runner?

No. The 6th gen needs its own brackets. For 2025 and newer we carry the Cali Raised LED 2025+ ditch brackets and kits, several Baja Designs A-pillar kits for 2025–2026, and KC offers a 2025–26 bracket option in its A-pillar kit.

Yellow or white fog lights on a 4Runner?

Yellow tends to bounce back less in fog, snow and dust; white looks cleaner and matches LED headlights. If you can't decide, the Morimoto XB Evo+ switches between white and yellow on the fly for 2010–2024 trucks.

Can I keep the factory fog light switch?

On several kits, yes. The Baja Designs Squadron-R SAE fog pocket kit for 2010–2024 uses plug-and-play adapters so you keep the factory switch, and the Baja S2 Sport kits for 2025–2026 include splitter harnesses for the stock switch.
