Truck Emblems, Badges and Letter Inserts: Fitment and Install Guide
Truck emblems, badges and letter inserts are the fastest way to change how the front and back of a truck read without paint or body work. This guide explains the four main types, how Tufskinz pieces attach according to their product descriptions, how to pick a color, how to remove old emblems safely, and what we carry for the Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Bronco, Bronco Sport, Ranger, Maverick, Ram and more.
Short answer: Most truck emblem upgrades are domed letter inserts or overlays cut to your exact model year. Inserts fill stamped or recessed factory letters, overlays sit over raised letters or badges, and both stick on with 3M automotive-grade adhesive without removing the factory part. Pick by vehicle and year first, then by finish. Tufskinz makes kits for Bronco, Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Ranger, Maverick, Ram and more.
What Tufskinz emblems and letter inserts are
Tufskinz makes domed (raised) letter inserts, letter overlays, badge overlays and engine badges cut to the shape of specific factory lettering. Nearly every piece we carry is described as domed, with a raised 3D face instead of a flat sticker look, backed with 3M automotive-grade adhesive. The descriptions do not state the material, so we will not guess at it. Many kits are offered in OE-match colors, so you can blend the letters into the paint or run a contrast color. You will find the full range in our Tufskinz collection and the broader emblems, badges and letters collection.
The four types: inserts, overlays, replacement badges, engine and model badges
- Letter inserts. Pieces that seat into stamped, embossed or recessed factory lettering, one piece per letter in most kits. The 2024–2026 Ranger tailgate inserts, for example, are described as seating flush in the factory recess for a molded-in look.
- Letter overlays. Pieces that sit on top of raised factory letters and cover them. The Ram 1500 tailgate letter overlays are described as shielding the factory letters from chips and fade.
- Badge and emblem overlays. Usually a single domed piece that lays over a whole factory badge, such as the Bronco Script Badge or the TRI-Color Badge for Toyota models.
- Replacement badges. Pieces sold to change the look of a specific factory badge, like the Front Fender Vent Replacement Badge for the 2023–2026 Super Duty, a 2-piece domed kit described as peel-and-stick with no drilling.
- Engine and model badges. Single domed callouts for what is under the hood, such as the Bronco Engine Badge (2.3L and 2.7L styles) or the 6.7 Power Stroke Badge. Some go over a factory callout; a few, like the AWD and Hybrid Badge, are made to stick to any clean, flat surface.
A heads-up on names: Tufskinz does not always use "insert" and "overlay" strictly. A few kits called overlays are described as filling the letters, and a few inserts are described as pressing over them. Read the description for how your specific kit sits, and if it is still unclear, ask us.
| Type | Where it goes | How it attaches (per descriptions) | Factory part | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Letter inserts | Into stamped or recessed factory letters | Domed pieces with 3M automotive-grade adhesive, one per letter | Stays in place underneath | 2024–2026 Tacoma tailgate inserts |
| Letter overlays | Over raised factory letters | Domed pieces with 3M adhesive laid on top | Stays, covered and shielded | 2025–2026 4Runner liftgate overlays |
| Badge overlays | Over a whole factory badge | One or a few domed pieces, 3M adhesive | Stays, covered | 4X4 Emblem |
| Replacement badges | A specific factory badge location | Domed pieces, peel-and-stick | Check the description for your kit | Super Duty fender vent badge |
| Engine and model badges | Over an engine callout, or any flat surface | Single domed piece, 3M adhesive | Stays when installed over it | Ranger Engine Badge |
How inserts and overlays attach
Across our Tufskinz data, the attachment method is the same: a pre-applied 3M automotive-grade adhesive backing, peel and stick. Several descriptions add that the adhesive holds through weather and car washes, and a few call the bond permanent. Install times in the descriptions run from about a minute for the USA Flag Emblem to about 45 minutes for larger kits like the Colorado and Canyon C Pillar Overlays; the 8-piece Maverick tailgate kit is listed at about 30 minutes.
The kit instructions are the final word, but standard adhesive-emblem practice looks like this:
- Test fit first. Lay each piece in place before peeling the liner so you know which letter goes where and how it lines up.
- Clean the surface. Wash, dry and wipe the letters with isopropyl alcohol to remove wax, ceramic coating residue and road film. Adhesive does not stick well to wax.
- Avoid cold panels. Adhesive bonds best on a warm panel, so a garage or warm afternoon helps.
- Press firmly and evenly. Press each piece down across its whole face, then give it time to set before a pressure wash.
Choosing a color and finish
Finish count varies a lot by kit. The Colorado and Canyon C Pillar Overlays come in six finishes, while the 2021–2026 F-150 tailgate inserts list about 50. Most kits fall into the 20 to 40 range. The descriptions group the options roughly like this:
- OE-match colors. Named factory paints like Lunar Rock, Cement Gray and Army Green on Toyota kits, or Cactus Gray, Area 51 and Code Orange on Ford kits. Use these to blend letters into the body or to pick out a second factory color.
- Blacks and neutrals. Gloss Black, Matte Black, Gloss White and similar, common for blacked-out builds.
- Textures and specialty. Forged Carbon Fiber, Real Carbon Fiber, Liquid Chrome and Reflective Black Topo appear on select kits.
- Loud options. American Flag, Camouflage, Hot Pink and Gloss or Matte TRD Red on several kits.
Tip: if you want the letters to match the truck, find your paint name on the door jamb sticker or in your build sheet and look for it in the finish list. For contrast, repeat a color already on the truck, like tow hooks or wheels. If you are also blacking out trim, our chrome delete guide covers that side of the job.
Removing old emblems without hurting the paint
Most Tufskinz kits install over or into the factory letters, so you usually remove nothing. When you do need to debadge a panel or take off an old aftermarket piece, standard practice is:
- Check how it is held on. Some factory emblems use only tape, others use clips or locating pins through the panel. Pulling a pinned emblem leaves holes, so look behind the panel or check a service manual first.
- Warm it up. A heat gun on low or a hair dryer softens the adhesive. Keep it moving and keep the panel warm to the touch, not hot, to protect paint and plastic.
- Cut the adhesive. Saw fishing line or dental floss behind the emblem to slice through the foam tape. Do not pry against the paint with a screwdriver or metal tool.
- Remove the residue. Use an automotive adhesive remover and a plastic razor or trim tool, then clean with isopropyl alcohol.
- Finish the paint. Older trucks may show a faint outline where the emblem sat. A light polish and wax usually evens it out.
Emblems and letters by vehicle
Fitment comes down to model year and sometimes trim. Factory lettering changes between generations, so a kit cut for one will not line up on another.
Toyota Tacoma
For "Tacoma tailgate letters," match your generation: the 2016–2023 Tacoma tailgate letter inserts are a six-piece set in 38 finishes, and the 2024–2026 Tacoma tailgate letter inserts are a six-piece set in 31 colors. TRD Pro owners on the 2024–2026 truck have their own TRD Pro tailgate letter inserts. Up front, the Tacoma grille letter overlays fit both the 2016–2023 and 2024+ trucks. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between letter inserts and letter overlays?
Inserts seat down into stamped or recessed factory lettering, so they fill the letter. Overlays sit on top of raised factory letters or a badge and cover it. Tufskinz names are not perfectly consistent, so read the product description to see which way your kit installs.
Do I have to remove my factory emblem to install Tufskinz?
For most kits, no. The descriptions say they install into or over the factory letters and badges, and several note that nothing gets removed and the original surface is protected underneath. You only need removal if you are debadging or taking off an old aftermarket piece.
How do you remove a truck emblem without damaging the paint?
Warm the emblem with a heat gun on low or a hair dryer, saw through the adhesive behind it with fishing line or dental floss, then lift residue with an automotive adhesive remover and a plastic tool. Never pry against the paint with metal, and check first whether the badge uses clips or locating pins.
Are Tacoma tailgate letters different for 2016–2023 and 2024–2026?
Yes. We carry separate Tufskinz tailgate letter insert kits for the 2016–2023 Tacoma and the 2024–2026 Tacoma, plus a TRD Pro-specific tailgate kit for 2024–2026. Order by model year and trim.
Will Ford Bronco emblems fit a Bronco Sport?
No. The Bronco and Bronco Sport are different vehicles with different lettering and badges, and Tufskinz cuts separate kits for each, including separate engine badges. Check the vehicle name in the product title before you order.
Can I get custom truck emblems with my own text?
Most Tufskinz pieces are cut to factory lettering, so the custom part is the color. In our current lineup the Center Console Badge with Custom Text for the 2014–2021 Tundra is made to your specified text, and the Rated badges and USA Flag Emblem offer a wide set of designs.
How long does a Tufskinz emblem install take?
The product descriptions list times from about a minute for the universal USA Flag Emblem to about 45 minutes for larger kits like the Colorado and Canyon C Pillar Overlays; the Maverick tailgate inserts are listed at about 30 minutes. Most tailgate and grille kits that list a time land between 10 and 25 minutes.
Can Tufskinz inserts be removed later?
Several descriptions call the 3M bond permanent, so plan on them staying. If you do need one off, use the same gentle heat and fishing-line method you would use on any adhesive emblem and take your time around the paint.
