LED Fog Lights: Yellow vs White, SAE Beams and Upgrades
LED fog lights are the low, wide lights in your bumper that are meant for bad weather, not for adding reach. This guide covers what a fog beam does, what SAE J583 means, how white, selective yellow and amber compare, and your upgrade options: an LED bulb, a complete factory-pocket assembly, or a bumper fog pod.
Short answer: For most trucks, a complete LED fog assembly built to SAE J583 and made for your factory fog pocket is the best upgrade. Pick white if you want the most light and a match to LED headlights. Pick selective yellow if you drive a lot in snow, rain or dust and find it easier on the eyes. Yellow is a comfort choice, not a big visibility gain, and it costs some output.
What a fog light is actually for
A fog light is a low-mounted light with a wide, flat beam and a sharp cutoff across the top. The job is to light the road surface, the lane lines and the shoulders close to the truck while keeping light out of the air at eye level. In fog or snow, light aimed up bounces off droplets back at you, which is why high beams turn into a white wall. A good fog beam stays under it.
A fog light is not a driving light or a spot. If you want reach, you want a driving or spot pattern, and our ditch lights guide on spot vs flood beams covers that in depth.
- Low. Mounted low in the bumper so the beam runs under the haze.
- Wide. Spread side to side to light lane edges, shoulders and ditches.
- Cut off. A sharp top edge so light does not climb into the fog or into oncoming drivers’ eyes.
SAE J583 and what "SAE fog" means
SAE J583 is the SAE standard for front fog lamps. In general terms, it sets how much light a fog lamp puts below the cutoff, how wide it spreads, and how little goes above it. The European equivalent is ECE R19.
You will see this on products we carry. The Morimoto XB Evo+ for the 2016–2023 Tacoma is listed as compliant with SAE J583 F3 and ECE R19. Some Morimoto 4Banger fog kits, such as the 2014–2024 4Runner and 2012–2015 Tacoma kits, list third-party verified SAE F compliance for their Wide Beam versions. KC HiLiTES puts SAE right in the FLEX ERA 3 Dual Mode SAE fog name.
Read closely, though: not every version of every kit is an SAE fog light. On the Morimoto 4Banger for the 2015–2020 F-150, Morimoto lists the NCS Wide Beam as meeting SAE F requirements for street-legal use, while the HXB Wide Beam trades that for more intensity. If road legality matters to you, buy the version that says SAE on it.
Yellow vs white fog lights: the honest version
Straight answer: yellow light does not physically punch through fog much better than white. Fog droplets scatter all visible colors about the same, so the old "cuts through fog" claim is overstated.
What yellow does do is feel better to a lot of drivers. Removing the blue end of the light reduces the glare that comes back off snow, rain and dust, and many people find it less tiring. It also looks the part.
The cost is output. Morimoto puts real numbers on this for the XB Evo+ for the 2018–2020 F-150: 1,500 lumens in white and 1,250 lumens in yellow from the same light. That is a fair picture of the trade.
White, selective yellow and amber compared
| White (about 5,500–6,000K) | Selective yellow | Amber | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Full-spectrum white light | Pale yellow with the blue end removed | Deeper orange-yellow, closer to a turn signal |
| Raw output | Highest of the three | Lower, since some light is removed | Usually lowest, depending on how it is made |
| Glare back in snow, rain, dust | Most noticeable | Reduced for most drivers | Reduced for most drivers |
| Matches LED headlights | Yes | No, by design | No, by design |
| Best for | Clear nights, max light, a clean match | Frequent bad-weather driving | The look; check your state on color |
| Legality | Generally allowed for fogs | Generally allowed for fogs | Often treated as yellow; varies by state |
How yellow gets made
- Yellow LED chips. The light is yellow at the source. The Morimoto XB for the 2021–2026 Bronco offers an optional 3000K version that Morimoto describes as genuine yellow from the chips, with no film over the lens.
- Switchable white and yellow. The Morimoto XB Evo+ line switches between white and yellow on the fly, the easy answer if you cannot decide; Morimoto states the beam distribution stays the same in either color.
- Film or lens. A yellow film or tinted lens over a white light. The Morimoto XB for the 2015–2020 F-150 ships with an optional yellow Lamin-X film kit, and the Cali Raised LED replacements for Toyota use an amber lens.
- Color-cycling bulbs. The Cali Raised LED Tri-Color Fog Light Replacement Bulbs cycle through 6000K white, 3000K amber and a 4300K mix by switching them off and on.
LED fog bulbs vs complete fog light assemblies
LED fog bulbs
An LED bulb drops into your existing halogen fog housing. It is the cheapest route, but the housing was designed around a halogen filament in one exact spot. If the LED emitters sit elsewhere, the beam can scatter and lose its cutoff. ORACLE says its V-Series H11 kit for the 2012–2019 Tacoma uses Precision Filament Geometry to mimic the halogen filament position so the beam focuses correctly, and lists 3,600 lumens per set of 6,000K white.
Bulbs make sense when your housing is in good shape and you want whiter light for less. Buy for your bulb size, such as H10, H11, H16 or 9006.
Complete LED fog assemblies
A complete assembly replaces the whole fog light with a housing and optic designed around the LEDs, so the beam pattern is what you are paying for. The Morimoto XB lights, for example, use projector optics; the XB for the 2012–2023 Tacoma runs three Philips Luxeon-T 5500K LEDs per side for 2,400 lumens, includes connectors and seals, and has integrated height adjusters for aiming.
A note on lumens: "raw" lumens are what the chips put out before the optic, so road output is lower for every brand. Beam pattern and SAE compliance matter more.
Factory-pocket fog lights vs bumper fog pods
- Factory-pocket assemblies. These keep the stock look, and most use the factory mounts and fog harness, so the stock switch still runs them.
- Pod-and-bracket kits for the factory pocket. A square or round LED pod on a bracket that fills the factory opening. The Morimoto 4Banger kits are built this way, and the 4Banger for the 2014–2024 4Runner includes pods, adjustable Type T brackets and bezels sized for the factory openings. KC HiLiTES and Cali Raised LED make bracket kits for Toyota fog pockets too.
- Bumper or auxiliary fog pods. For aftermarket bumpers or trucks with no fog pocket. The KC HiLiTES FLEX ERA 3 3.5" SAE Fog 2-Light Master Kit is an example; KC describes the Dual Mode SAE as a fog light and a high-powered off-road light in one.
If you are shopping pods in general, our LED pod lights buying guide covers sizes and mounting. For fog use, buy a fog beam, not a spot or flood with a yellow cover.

Tacoma fog lights
Cali Raised LED makes amber-lens LED fog light replacements for the 2016–2023 Tacoma built with 3500K amber LED chips. For the 2024+ Tacoma, the Cali Raised LED Fog Light Replacement Kit replaces the factory fog lights with two 6-inch light bars and is listed at 7,000 lumens total (no SAE fog rating is listed); the listing also names the 2022+ Tundra and 2025+ 4Runner. More in our Toyota Tacoma lighting upgrade guide.
4Runner fog lights
On the 2010–2024 4Runner, the Morimoto XB plugs into the factory H11 fog connectors and lists 1,200 raw lumens per light. To keep your housings, ORACLE lists an H16 S3 Pro LED conversion kit for the 2014–2023 4Runner. See our 4Runner lighting upgrade guide.
Tundra fog lights
For the 2014–2021 Tundra, the Morimoto XB replaces the stock halogen fogs with projector optics, and the XB Evo+ is the switchable version. Our Tundra overland build guide covers the bigger build.
F-150 fog lights
On 2004–2014 F-150s, the Morimoto XB uses the original mounting points and factory connectors. On 2015–2020 trucks, pick between the XB, the switchable Evo+ and the 4Banger. Our Ford F-150 lighting upgrade guide.
Wiring and switches, kept simple
If your truck came with fog lights, most of the assemblies above plug into the factory fog connectors, so your factory switch keeps working.
Adding fogs to a truck without them, or pods to an aftermarket bumper, means a switch and a harness, with a relay and fuse so the switch carries only a small control current. For Toyota owners who want a factory-looking switch, Cali Raised LED makes a Toyota OEM Square Style "FOG LIGHTS" switch that fits factory openings; the listing names the RAV4, 2022 Tundra and 2024 Tacoma, and the harness is sold separately. For Toyota pods in factory fog pockets, the Cali Raised LED H11 OEM adaptor plugs a pod into the factory fog harness without cutting wires. Browse light wiring and harnesses for the rest.
Aim them low
A fog light aimed too high is just glare. It lights up the fog and blinds oncoming drivers. Many of the assemblies we carry have built-in height adjusters, so set them.
- Park level. Level ground, normal tire pressure and load.
- Face a wall. About 25 feet back from a wall or garage door.
- Mark the height. Measure from the ground to the center of each fog lens and mark that height on the wall.
- Set the cutoff below it. A common starting point is the top of the cutoff a few inches below that mark.
- Check on the road. If oncoming drivers flash you, bring them down.
Are LED and yellow fog lights legal?
Generally, fog lights built to a standard like SAE J583, mounted in the factory location and aimed correctly, are fine for road use. Beyond that, rules on color (white and yellow are widely allowed; wording on amber varies), when fogs may be used and mounting height differ by state. Rules vary by state; check yours.
Off-road lights are a separate category. Light bars, spot pods and ditch lights are usually not legal on public roads. If it does not say fog and SAE, do not count on it being street legal.

Frequently asked questions
Are yellow fog lights better than white?
Not by much. Yellow does not reach farther into fog than white, and filtering costs some output. Many drivers find it easier on the eyes in snow, rain and dust, and that is a fair reason to choose it.
What is selective yellow?
A pale yellow made by removing the blue end of the light rather than tinting it orange. It was once required on French cars and is the classic yellow fog look. Amber is a deeper orange, closer to a turn signal.
Are LED fog lights legal?
LED fog lights built to a fog lamp standard such as SAE J583 are generally fine on the road when mounted and aimed correctly. Rules on color and use vary by state, so check yours. Off-road pods and light bars usually are not road legal.
Can I replace my factory fog lights with LED?
Yes. Swap in an LED bulb that fits your factory socket, or replace the whole housing with a complete LED assembly built for your truck. The assembly costs more but has an optic designed around the LEDs, which usually means a cleaner beam.
What is the difference between fog lights and driving lights?
A fog light throws a low, wide beam with a sharp cutoff to light the road edges near the truck. A driving light throws a long, narrower beam to add reach with your high beams.
What does SAE J583 mean on a fog light?
It is the SAE standard for front fog lamps. A light built to it keeps its output low and wide under a sharp cutoff, with limits on light above the cutoff.
