Low Profile Front Truss for Ford Dana 60 Kingpin & Balljoint Axles 1985-1997
Ford's Dana 60 front is the axle most one-ton swaps are built around, and a housing carrying 40s, lockers, and hydro assist will eventually bow if the tubes are left bare. Artec's low profile truss for the 1985-1991.5 kingpin and 1992-1997 balljoint housings runs the full length of the axle, tying both tubes into the center section so bending loads spread across a 3/8" steel spine instead of concentrating at the diff. This second-generation design uses wider interlocking 1/4" gussets that tab together and self-fixture during assembly, and the short overall height keeps the truss away from the oil pan at full bump. It suits Jeep TJ, XJ, and buggy swaps where every inch of uptravel is worth protecting.
Features
- 3/8" mild steel truss top with interlocking 1/4" mild steel gussets
- Gussets tab together for self-fixturing tack-and-weld assembly
- Main gussets are wider than the first-generation design for added rigidity
- Full-length coverage ties both axle tubes into the center section
- Low overall height preserves oil pan clearance and suspension uptravel
- Clearanced for the differential breather tube (breather adapters required)
- Precision CNC cut and bent, made in the USA
Confirm your housing before ordering: this truss fits 1985-1991.5 kingpin and 1992-1997 balljoint Ford Dana 60 fronts only, not the 1978-1979 axles or later Super Duty housings. It ships as bare steel for a competent welder to install — preheat the housing to around 400 degrees, alternate stitch welds, let everything cool slowly, trim the gussets as your pinion angle requires, then paint or powder coat. See the GM 14 Bolt Front Truss, check the Low Profile Front Truss for the Ultimate Dana 60 if your build uses a crate housing, and browse the full axle reinforcements collection.
Low Profile Front Truss for Ford Dana 60 Kingpin & Balljoint Axles 1985-1997 FAQs
Which Ford Dana 60 housings does this truss fit?
It fits Ford kingpin Dana 60 front axles built from 1985 to 1991.5 and Ford balljoint Dana 60 fronts from 1992 to 1997. It does not fit the 1978-1979 axles or the later Super Duty housings — Artec builds separate trusses for those.
What does a proper weld-in look like?
Set the housing level so it cannot twist, preheat the axle to roughly 400 degrees, and run alternating stitch welds instead of long continuous beads. Let the axle cool slowly — a welding blanket overnight works well — then dress the welds and paint the bare steel. This is a job for a competent welder.
Will I need to modify anything to fit my build?
Possibly. Depending on your wheelbase and the pinion angle you set, some gusset trimming may be needed, so test fit the whole assembly before final welding. The truss is clearanced for the differential breather tube, but breather adapters are required to route it cleanly.
