Lockers

An open differential feeds power to the wheel with the least grip — precisely backwards from what a crossed-up truck needs. A locker forces both wheels on the axle to turn together, so a tire in the air no longer means zero forward progress. This is a small, deliberate collection: filter by year, make, and model, confirm your axle and gear ratio before ordering, and ask us if your rig's spec is fuzzy. Few upgrades announce themselves this immediately.

Selectable or automatic — decide how you drive first

A selectable locker is open until you flip the switch, so the truck drives normally on pavement and locks when the trail demands it. The costs are real: air-actuated units need a compressed air source and line routing, electric units need wiring, and both add complexity inside the diff. Automatic lockers skip all that — always ready, mechanically simple — but they make their own decisions, and you'll feel it: clicking around corners, changed manners in snow and rain, a truck that occasionally steps sideways on throttle mid-turn. Daily driver that sees hard trails on weekends? Selectable earns its price. Dedicated trail rig? An automatic's quirks stop mattering.

Rear first, front for the committed

Most rigs get the biggest single improvement from a rear locker: it fixes the classic one-wheel-spin failure on climbs and crossed-axle terrain while leaving the steering alone. A front locker transforms technical crawling but makes the steering heavy and pushy while engaged, so it's a part you buy for specific terrain rather than general insurance. Locked at both ends is a different class of capability — and a different class of stress on parts.

Budget for what the locker asks of everything else

Full traction means full torque delivery, and shock loads that used to vanish in wheel spin now land on shafts and joints — throttle discipline helps, and so does an honest look at axle reinforcements if your axle is marginal for your tires. Before ordering, confirm your axle model, gear ratio, and spline count; lockers are specific about all three, and the year/make/model filter starts that job but doesn't finish it — plenty of rigs carry non-original axles from our axles range or elsewhere. And keep the recovery kit stocked: a locker postpones getting stuck; it has never once abolished it.

Can I daily drive a truck with a locker?

With a selectable locker, absolutely — disengaged, the differential behaves like stock, and the locker only exists when you flip the switch. Automatic lockers are livable but opinionated: expect ratcheting sounds in tight turns and changed manners on wet or snowy pavement. If most of your miles are commuting with weekends off-road, selectable is the version that keeps both lives pleasant.

What do selectable lockers need to operate — air, wiring, or cable?

Depends on the actuation. Air-operated lockers need a compressed air source and a line routed into the differential housing; electric lockers need a switched circuit run to the axle; cable-actuated units are purely mechanical. Whichever you choose, budget for the supporting system in both money and install time — the locker itself is only part of the project.

Do lockers increase the risk of breaking axle shafts?

They raise the stakes, yes. Torque that used to bleed off as one-wheel spin now gets delivered in full, and shock loads from bouncing, hooking tires land directly on shafts, joints, and gears. Throttle discipline is the free fix — smooth, slow inputs instead of bursts. If your axle is already marginal for your tire size, shore up the weak links before adding the locker.

Should I lock the front axle, the rear, or both?

Generally no — ABS reads wheel speeds and keeps working, and an engaged locker simply does mechanically what brake-based traction control attempts to imitate. Behavior does vary by platform, and some vehicles relax their electronic aids in low range regardless. If your truck runs an unusual electronics package, check your platform's specifics or ask us before ordering.
