Off-Road Skid Plates FAQs
Do I need a skid plate if I only drive on gravel?
Not strictly, but gravel and washouts can launch rocks into your oil pan and transmission. If your truck spends time on unpaved roads or you hit trails, a skid plate is protection against a dented pan or a punctured tank.
Will a Tacoma skid plate fit a 2nd gen and 3rd gen?
Some listings cover both, such as the C4 Fabrication Tacoma front plate listed for 2005-2023, while others are specific to one generation. The fuel tank skid, for example, is separate for 2nd gen and 3rd gen. Check the generation and year range in the title.
What is the difference between steel and aluminum skid plates?
Steel handles repeated hard hits and rock sliding best, but it weighs more. Aluminum is lighter and does not rust, though it can gouge or crack on a hard strike. Many owners choose steel for trails with sharp rock and aluminum for lighter use.
Do skid plates affect underbody cooling or oil changes?
They can. Some designs include an access hole for oil filter and drain plug, and some have vents for airflow. Read the listing for the access details of your engine.
Are mounts and bolt kits sold separately?
Some plates come with hardware and others do not, and this collection also lists mounts and bolt kits on their own. Look for what is included in each listing so you are not short a bolt on install day.
