Guides for this category

What's in Off-Road Armor & Skid Plates

This collection covers the protection that goes under and along the sides of a trail rig. Most of it is skid plates, followed by rock sliders and rocker armor, steps and foot pegs, body armor, and a small group of drivetrain guards. Main brands are CBI Offroad Fab, DV8 Offroad, Artec Industries, Clayton Off Road and Fishbone Offroad, with C4 Fabrication and ICON Impact Series Armor adding Toyota-specific plates and sliders. Coverage leans toward the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra, Bronco and Lexus GX.

How to choose

Decide what you are most likely to hit. Skid plates guard the engine, transmission, transfer case, fuel tank and differentials from below. Sliders protect the rocker panels and give the body something to pivot on over a rock. Most people end up with both, so the lower body is covered end to end.

  • Match your exact year, generation and engine; plates are cut around specific mounting points.
  • Check cab and wheelbase for sliders, since a short and long version are not interchangeable.
  • Confirm whether the listing is a single plate, a set or a full kit before comparing options.
  • Think about weight and access: a plate that makes oil changes awkward may need a drain hole or access panel.

Pair armor with front bumpers and recovery points, or browse skid plates and rock sliders on their own.

Off-Road Armor & Skid Plates FAQs

Do I need skid plates, rock sliders or both?

They protect different areas. Skid plates cover the mechanical parts underneath, such as the engine, transmission and fuel tank. Sliders protect the rocker panels and doors and help the body slide over obstacles. On a trail rig that sees rocks, running both is common.

Will a skid plate fit my Tacoma or 4Runner?

Skid plates are cut for a specific generation and often a specific engine or transmission, such as C4 Fabrication listing 4Runner plates for the 5th generation and Tacoma plates by 2nd and 3rd generation. Check the generation and year range in the product title. If in doubt, use the vehicle selector or call (920) 249-7744.

Are rock sliders bolt-on or weld-on?

It depends on the product. Many vehicle-specific sliders bolt to factory mounting points, while some are built for welding or need drilling. Read the listing details for install notes and hardware included before you order.

Do skid plates make a truck louder or hotter underneath?

Solid plates can trap some heat and sound near the transmission and engine, which is why some designs include vents or relief cuts. It is rarely an issue for normal trail use, but it is worth looking at the design if you tow or crawl for long periods.

Can armor be installed with basic hand tools?

Most bolt-on skid plates and sliders go on with a jack, a socket set and a helper, since the parts are heavy. Some applications need drilling or trimming. We can answer questions about a particular part, though we do not install every product we sell.
