Prinsu Design Studio makes low-profile, modular aluminum roof racks in Idaho Falls, Idaho, cut for specific vehicles instead of adapted from a universal kit. The main choice is between the Original rack and the Prinsu Pro, which adds stronger crossbars with drop-in mounting points. Fitment, install method and load rating vary by vehicle, so this guide walks through how the racks are built, which vehicles we carry them for, and the accessories that bolt on.

Short answer: Pick the rack listed for your exact vehicle, cab and year. Choose the Original if you want the slim, simple platform, or the Prinsu Pro if you plan to bolt on a lot of gear: Prinsu describes the Pro crossbars as 44 percent stronger, and each carries six drop-in points. Some racks bolt to factory points with no drilling (5th gen 4Runner full rack, 4-door Bronco hardtop, Land Cruiser 250, GX 550); others require drilling (2021+ F-150, 2019+ Silverado) or a headliner drop and drilling (2024+ Ranger). Check the install note on the product page before you order.

How are Prinsu roof racks built?

Every Prinsu rack follows the same basic layout: two side rails that mount to the roof, aluminum crossbars between them, a wind deflector at the front and stainless hardware. The racks are powder-coated aluminum, which keeps weight down and won't rust. Because the crossbars bolt to the side rails, you can slide them, add more or take some out as your load changes, and that modular layout is the core idea behind the whole range.

Crossbars come in fixed widths to suit each rack. The standalone Prinsu Crossbar is listed in 44, 47, 48.5, 50, 51, 52 and 54 inch lengths, so you can add a bar later by matching the bars already on your rack. If you lose or strip a screw, the Prinsu Crossbar Hardware Kit has twelve 1/4-20 x 1 inch stainless machine screws and washers; Prinsu notes every rack already ships with a full hardware kit.

Prinsu Pro vs Original: what's the difference?

Both racks share the same low profile. The Pro is the newer design, built for people who mount a lot of accessories directly to the crossbars.

Original Prinsu rack Prinsu Pro rack
Crossbars Aluminum crossbars you can slide, add or remove Redesigned crossbars Prinsu describes as 44 percent stronger
Mounting points Accessories attach with Prinsu T-nuts and mounts Six integrated drop-in points per crossbar
Side rails Low-profile side rails Two-part side rail with a top bend for added rigidity
Wind deflector Standard or light bar cutout on many models Standard or light bar cutout on many models
Best for A clean, simple platform for boards, a case or a tent Builds that will carry lights, an awning, a tent and recovery gear

If you only plan to carry a pair of recovery boards and a case, the Original does the job. If you expect the rack to become the mounting base for most of your gear, the Pro's drop-in points save fiddling with T-nuts. Prinsu rack styles beyond the roof

Cab racks and full vs 3/4 racks

On pickups, a cab rack covers the cab roof only. On SUVs like the 4Runner, Prinsu offers full-length racks and shorter 3/4 racks, such as the Prinsu 3/4 rack for the 2010-2024 4Runner. A full rack gives the most room for a tent plus gear; a 3/4 rack is shorter and lighter, leaving part of the roof open. Our model guides for the Tacoma roof rack and the 4Runner roof rack cover those trade-offs.

Top racks for truck toppers

Prinsu's top racks bolt to a fiberglass topper instead of the cab. The Prinsu Top Rack for 2022-2026 Tundra toppers is built for Leer, A.R.E., Snugtop and similar toppers fitted with Thule or Yakima tracks, with no drilling into the truck. Prinsu notes capacity depends on the crossbar count and is limited by the topper itself, so check the topper maker's rating. For open-bed setups, see our Tacoma bed rack guide.

Racks for over-cab campers

If a Tacoma carries an in-bed camper that hangs over the cab, the Prinsu Habitat Camper Roof Rack gives you a partial cab rack that clears the camper. It ships with 5 cargo crossbars plus 2 for a deflector or light bar, and Prinsu says it is for over-cab campers only.

Prinsu accessories: lights, awnings, tents and more

Light bar mounts

Many Prinsu racks offer a wind deflector with a light bar cutout, which is the cleanest way to run a bar up front. Prinsu also makes front-facing brackets sized for specific pods, such as the front-facing brackets for Baja Designs pods, and a general Prinsu Light Bar Mount. Those two listings are light on detail, so check the product page for which lights they take. Our Tacoma light bar guide covers sizing and wiring, and light bar mounts has other options.

Awning brackets

The Prinsu Quick Release Awning Mount Brackets 2.0 are the most detailed option. After the first install (Prinsu says under 2 hours with standard tools), the awning and mount come on or off in under a minute without tools, using a twist-lock spring plunger. They're built for 270-degree and other large awnings, sold as a pair for one awning, lockable, and listed for both Pro and Original racks. Find awnings in vehicle awnings and accessories.

Rooftop tent mounts

For tents, Prinsu offers Prinsu Tent Mounts and 1 inch tent mounting feet. Match the mount to your tent's rails and check that the rack's dynamic rating covers the tent weight while driving; the static rating is what matters for a tent with people in it while parked. Browse rooftop tents.

How hard is it to install a Prinsu roof rack?

It depends on the vehicle. Bolt-on racks that use factory points, like the 5th gen 4Runner full rack or the 4-door Bronco hardtop rack, are a driveway job with hand tools and a helper. Racks that require drilling, like the 2021+ F-150 and 2019+ Silverado, need careful measuring, sealing every hole and more time. The 2024+ Ranger racks also need a headliner drop. General steps:

  1. Confirm the right rack for your year, cab and roof options, and read the install note on the listing.
  2. Lay out the parts and loosely assemble the side rails and crossbars before anything goes on the roof.
  3. Mount the feet to the factory points or to the drilled locations, following Prinsu's instructions and sealing any holes.
  4. Set the rack on the feet, square it and torque the hardware to spec.
  5. Space the crossbars for what you'll carry, then add the deflector and accessories. Recheck the hardware after the first few drives.

Rack noise usually comes from crossbar spacing or a missing deflector. Prinsu sells noise-reducing edge trim in several crossbar lengths if you need it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Prinsu Pro and the Original rack?

Both are low-profile modular aluminum racks. The Pro adds redesigned crossbars that Prinsu describes as 44 percent stronger than earlier Prinsu bars, six integrated drop-in mounting points per crossbar and a two-part side rail for more rigidity. The Original is the simpler platform with slide-and-add crossbars.

Do Prinsu roof racks require drilling?

It depends on the vehicle. The 5th gen 4Runner full rack, the 4-door Bronco hardtop Pro rack, the Land Cruiser 250 and the GX 550 racks bolt on with no drilling. The 2021+ F-150 and 2019+ Silverado Pro racks require drilling, and the 2024+ Ranger racks need a headliner drop and drilling. Check the install note on each product page.

How much weight can a Prinsu rack hold?

Ratings vary by rack. The 5th gen 4Runner full non-drill rack is rated at 600 lb dynamic and 1,000 lb static, and the Land Cruiser 250 and GX 550 Pro racks at 700 lb dynamic and 1,200 lb static. Dynamic is the limit while driving; static is the limit parked, such as a rooftop tent with people in it. Also stay within your vehicle's roof rating.

Can I mount a rooftop tent on a Prinsu rack?

Yes. Prinsu sells tent mounts and 1 inch tent mounting feet. Make sure the tent's weight is within the rack's dynamic rating and your vehicle's roof rating, and that the tent's rails line up with the crossbar spacing.

Can I add a light bar to a Prinsu rack?

Yes. Many Prinsu racks offer a wind deflector with a light bar cutout, sized per vehicle, for example a 40 inch cutout on the Ranger SuperCrew and Land Cruiser 250. Prinsu also makes light bar mounts and front-facing pod brackets.

Which Prinsu awning brackets should I get?

The Quick Release Awning Mount Brackets 2.0 work with both Pro and Original racks, carry 270-degree and other large awnings, and let you remove the awning in under a minute without tools after the first install. They are sold as a pair for one awning, in low profile or standard mount types.
