A Tacoma bed rack turns the space above your bed into a place to carry a rooftop tent, recovery boards, fuel cans, bikes and lights while keeping the bed itself usable. This guide covers the main styles (low-profile, mid or half height, cab height, roof-rack height and chase racks), how they change by generation and by 5-ft or 6-ft bed, what to check about drilling, tonneau covers and load ratings, and where MOLLE panels fit in.

Short answer: Pick the height first: low or half height for everyday gear and the lowest center of gravity, cab height for a rooftop tent that sits close to the roofline, roof-rack height to line up with a roof rack, or a chase rack for lights and light gear. Then match your exact generation (2005–2023 or 2024+) and bed length (5-ft or 6-ft), and check the rack's static and dynamic load ratings.

The four questions that decide which rack you need

Answer these first and the list of options gets short fast.

  • Which Tacoma do you have? Many racks are listed for 2005–2023, while the 2024+ Tacoma has its own listings.
  • Short bed or long bed? Tacomas come with a roughly 5-ft or 6-ft bed. Some racks are adjustable, some are sold by length.
  • What goes on top, and how heavy is it? A rooftop tent and a light bar ask very different things of a rack.
  • What else is on the bed? A tonneau cover or bed-rail accessories can compete for the same mounting points.

Bed rack heights: low-profile, half height, cab height and roof-rack height

Height is the biggest choice. A taller rack gives more room underneath and lets long items clear the cab, but adds wind noise and makes the top harder to load. A lower rack keeps weight down, with less space underneath. If you are also adding a roof rack, our Tacoma roof rack guide helps you plan both together.

Style Height (from the listing) Best for Examples we carry
Low-profile crossbars Rago crossmembers add 7 in. above the bed rail cap; the DV8 MTO is 8 in. from the top of the bed Lights, flags, boards, a tent you want sitting low Rago Truck Bed Rack Crossmembers, DV8 MTO Series Mid-Size Bed Rack
Half or mid height Fishbone Tackle Rack 12.5 in. off the top of the bed rail; Cali Raised LED Overland Bed Rack 17.5 in. tall (2005–2023 version) Boxes and fuel cans with bed access underneath Fishbone Short Bed Tackle Rack, Cali Raised LED Overland Bed Rack
Cab height Close to the cab roofline; Eezi-Awn says the K9 keeps gear below cab height Rooftop tents and aerodynamics CBI Cab Height Bed Rack, Eezi-Awn K9 Bed Rail Rack Kit
Roof-rack height Matched to a roof rack Long items spanning cab and bed CBI Roof Rack Height Bed Rack (2024–2026), Cali Raised LED Bed Rack Roof Rack Extension
Chase rack Short frame behind the cab Light bars, pods and light gear Fishbone Chase Rack, ADD Race Series Chase Rack

DV8 says that with the MTO rack's 8-in. height, a collapsed rooftop tent sits at or slightly above the cab roof, keeping wind drag and noise down. The closer the top of your load is to the roofline, the less it catches the wind.

Chase racks: lights and light gear, not tents

A chase rack is a shorter frame at the front of the bed behind the cab. It is mainly a lighting and accessory mount and leaves most of the bed open for dirt, firewood or bikes. It is not the tool for a rooftop tent.

  • Fishbone Offroad Chase Rack (2005–2023). 10-gauge steel with stainless hardware, rated by Fishbone to support up to 75 lb, and it bolts into the factory bed rail or clamps onto the bed side. The MOLLE window panel is sold separately and requires the chase rack, or you can buy the chase rack and window panel together.
  • ADD Race Series Chase Rack (2024+). Addictive Desert Designs says it follows the Tacoma's bodylines and has an adjustable actuated light bar mount that takes one 40-in. light bar or five round lights. Bed cab corner braces are included, and the finish is a 2-stage hammer black powder coat.

If you want a chase-rack style system that clamps on and carries more, Big Days chase racks are another route; see our Big Days chase rack fitment guide for how they fit the Tacoma, including the deck-rail clamp option.

Tacoma bed racks by generation and bed length

1st gen (1996–2004 listings)

Options are limited: CBI Offroad Fab lists Overland Bed Bars for 1996–2004, and Rago says its universal crossmembers adjust to any truck bed size.

2nd and 3rd gen (2005–2023)

Most of the choice is here, because one rack design usually covers both generations: the CBI Cab Height Bed Rack, Roof Rack Height Bed Rack and Overland Bed Rack; the Cali Raised LED Overland Bed Rack; the ADD-Lander Overland Rack (Heritage) (tube and plate steel, per ADD); and the Fishbone Tackle Racks.

  • Bed length matters on some racks. Fishbone sells a 61-in. short bed Tackle Rack (FB21244) and a 74-in. long bed Tackle Rack (FB21245). Both are 10-gauge steel and 12.5 in. tall off the bed rail; Fishbone rates the long-bed version to support up to 500 lb. A separate bed wall bracket kit is listed for the Tackle Racks, so check whether your install needs it.
  • Others adjust. Eezi-Awn says the K9 Bed Rail Rack works on both the 5-ft and 6-ft bed, and the Cali Raised LED roof rack extension uses adjustable feet for all 2005–2025 bed lengths (it mounts to Cali Raised LED Tall Bed Racks).
  • Check the fine print on years. The Cali Raised LED Overland Bed Rack is titled 2005–2023, but its description mentions 2005–2022. When a title and description disagree, confirm on the product page or call us before ordering.

4th gen (2024+)

For 2024–2026 we carry the CBI Cab Height Bed Rack and Roof Rack Height Bed Rack, CBI Bed Bars (2024), the Cali Raised LED Overland Bed Rack for 2024+ (55 lb and mostly aluminum, per Cali Raised LED) and the ADD Race Series Chase Rack. CBI also lists Overland Bed Bars with a 2004–2024 range; that span crosses several generations, so confirm your truck on the listing.

Mounting: factory bed rails, clamps and drilling

Most 2005-and-newer Tacomas have Toyota's factory bed rail (deck rail) channels, and many racks use them, which usually means no holes in the bed. What the listings say:

  • Eezi-Awn K9. The legs saddle the top of the bed rail and attach to the factory channel under the rail with a threaded plate and two bolts. Eezi-Awn says no drilling is required for any size rack.
  • Rago crossmembers. The supplied hardware needs no drilling; they can also mount to Toyota factory slotted bed rails, but those t-nuts are not included.
  • Fishbone short-bed Tackle Rack and chase rack. Bolt into the factory bed rail or clamp onto the bed side.
  • Accessories vary. Rago's Quick Fist mounts may need some drilling, so read each listing.

Need extra rail nuts? Cali Raised LED sells a bed rail accessory nut kit for the Toyota OEM rail system.

Tonneau covers

This is an easy one to miss. A rack that sits on or clamps to the top of the bed rail uses the same space a tonneau cover's rails need, and a folding cover also needs room to open. Whether a pair works depends on the specific rack and cover, and our listings do not confirm tonneau compatibility for the racks above, so check both sets of instructions or call us with both part numbers.

On the storage side, Cali Raised LED does offer a BAKflip version of its 2005–2023 bed MOLLE system, listed separately from the standard version, so BAKFlip owners should start there.

Rooftop tents and load ratings

For a rooftop tent, the load rating matters most. The static rating is what the rack holds parked: tent, people and bedding. The dynamic rating is what it carries while driving, when bumps and braking multiply the forces, and it is always lower. What the listings state:

  • Eezi-Awn K9 Bed Rail Rack Kit: static capacity of up to 1,000 lb and dynamic in the range of 500 lb, per Eezi-Awn. The K9 load bar kit has a rear lip made for drilling and bolting down a soft- or hard-shell tent, and 8mm T-slots on top.
  • DV8 MTO Series: DV8 recommends 750 lb as a guideline for static load capacity.
  • Fishbone long-bed Tackle Rack: supports up to 500 lb, per Fishbone.
  • Cali Raised LED Overland Bed Rack: Cali Raised LED says it is rated to exceed the weight limits of nearly any tent on the market. Confirm the actual numbers against your tent before you buy.

Also check your tent maker's minimum dynamic load requirement, and remember that everything on the rack counts against your truck's payload (on the door jamb sticker; it varies by cab, bed and trim).

MOLLE panels: using the bed walls

A rack handles what sits above the bed; MOLLE panels use the bed walls, keeping small, heavy items (jacks, shovels, fuel, first aid) low and within reach. For more on organizing the bed itself, see our truck bed storage and organization guide.

  • 2016–2023, by bed length. Fishbone Offroad makes 10-gauge steel bed wall and bedside panels sold separately for the 5-ft bed (such as the FB21326 bed wall panel) and the 6-ft bed (such as the FB21310 front bed wall panel).
  • 2005–2023. Cali Raised LED's bed MOLLE system and front bed MOLLE system (the front system's description says 2005–2021, so confirm on the listing).
  • 2024+. The SXTH Element front bed MOLLE panel kit is 1/8-in. aluminum and 100% bolt-on with no cutting or drilling, per SXTH. Rago Fabrication's bed cab panels install to existing mounting points behind the factory bed rail (Rago notes some drilling is required for both its bed cab and bed side panels), and its bed side panels keep the OEM tie-downs, bed lights, storage compartments and electrical connections working. C4 Fabrication's bed cab and bed side panels keep the OEM tie-down points, and C4 says they add strength to the factory composite bed. Cali Raised LED's front bed MOLLE system comes in short- and long-bed versions.

For long tools, Rago's Quick Fist mounts and clamps work on panels and racks (Rago says each clamp supports about 25 lb), and its bed rail modular accessory mounts fit any Tacoma with the OEM bed rail system without drilling.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 2016–2023 Tacoma bed rack fit a 2024 Tacoma?

Do not assume it will. The 2024+ Tacoma is a new generation, and most racks we carry are listed separately for 2005–2023 and 2024+ (CBI Offroad Fab's bed racks and Cali Raised LED's Overland Bed Racks both split them this way). Order the listing whose title matches your model year.

Do I need a different bed rack for a 5-ft and 6-ft Tacoma bed?

Sometimes. Fishbone Offroad sells separate short-bed (61 in.) and long-bed (74 in.) Tackle Racks for 2005–2023 trucks, while the Eezi-Awn K9 Bed Rail Rack Kit and the DV8 MTO rack are listed as working with both bed lengths. Check the bed length on the listing before you order.

Can a Tacoma bed rack hold a rooftop tent?

Several are built with that in mind. Eezi-Awn lists its K9 Bed Rail Rack at a static capacity of up to 1,000 lb and a dynamic capacity around 500 lb, and DV8 recommends 750 lb as a static guideline for its MTO rack. Compare the tent's weight, plus people and bedding when parked, against the rack's static rating, and the tent weight against the dynamic rating while driving.

What is the difference between a bed rack and a chase rack?

A bed rack is a load-carrying frame over the bed for tents, boxes and gear. A chase rack is a shorter frame near the cab, usually built for lights and smaller gear; the Fishbone Offroad Tacoma chase rack, for example, is rated for up to 75 lb.

Do I have to drill my Tacoma to install a bed rack?

Many do not. The Eezi-Awn K9 Bed Rail Rack Kit and the Rago Fabrication crossmembers are both described as no-drill, and the Fishbone short-bed Tackle Rack and chase rack can bolt into the factory bed rail or clamp onto the bed side. Read each listing, because accessories such as panels and mounts vary.

Can I run a tonneau cover with a bed rack?

Sometimes, but plan it before you buy. Many racks mount to the top of the bed rail or the factory deck rail, which is the same area tonneau covers use, so the two can compete for space. Check the rack and cover instructions together, or call us with both part numbers.
