Toyota Tacoma Light Bar Guide: Roof, Bumper and Grille by Generation
A Tacoma light bar comes down to two decisions: where on the truck it goes, and which bracket was built for your generation. The mount decides the size of bar you can run, whether you drill, whether it works with a roof rack, and how the wiring gets to the cab. This guide sorts the Tacoma light bar kits and mounts we carry by location and by generation, with fitment taken straight from each listing.
Short answer: For a clean look that keeps the roofline stock, start with a lower bumper or grille kit (30-inch to 32-inch bars on 2005-2023 trucks, model-specific Diode Dynamics and Cali Raised LED kits on 2024+). For a roof bar, the KC HiLiTES and Baja Designs roof kits carry 50-inch or 8XL bars, but some require drilling and Baja says its 2005-2023 roof kits will not work with a roof rack. Ditch lights are a separate add-on for side coverage. Confirm years, trim and grille style on each product page.
Where a light bar can go on a Tacoma
There are five common mounting spots on a Tacoma, and each one trades looks, wind noise and install effort.
| Location | Typical bar size in our listings | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Roof / windshield | 50-inch (KC HiLiTES, Baja Designs), 52-inch curved (Cali Raised) | Usually the most wind noise. Some kits require drilling and some will not work with a roof rack. |
| Roof rack front | 40-inch cutout (C4 Fabrication), rack-specific kits (Cali Raised) | Good if you already run or plan to run a rack. Matched to a specific rack. |
| Lower bumper | 30-inch to 32-inch (2005-2023), SS10 bar (2024-2026) | Factory face stays mostly stock. Hidden and flush styles. |
| Behind or in the grille | 32-inch (Cali Raised), SS20 or four SS5 pods (Diode Dynamics, 2024-2026) | Clean look, trim-specific fitment. Check grille style and camera options. |
| Hood / A-pillar (ditch) | Pods, not bars | Side coverage rather than distance. Several brackets list no drilling; check each listing. |
Hood and A-pillar mounts are for pod lights, covered below and in our LED pod lights buying guide.
Tacoma light bars by generation
Toyota changed the Tacoma body in 2005, 2016 and 2024, and brackets do not carry across those lines unless the listing says so. Several roof kits are listed for both 2nd and 3rd gen trucks. Use the years printed in each listing, and where a title and description disagree, go with the narrower range and confirm on the product page.
2nd gen Tacoma (2005-2015)
For the roof, the KC HiLiTES Gravity Titan Overhead Light Bar Kit for 2005-2023 Toyota Tacoma covers both 2nd and 3rd gen trucks, and Baja Designs offers the OnX6+ Arc 50-inch and 8XL Linkable roof kits for 2005-2023. Down low, Cali Raised LED makes the 32" Lower Bumper Hidden LED Light Bar Brackets Kit and a matching 32" Lower Bumper Flush LED Light Bar Brackets Kit. Cali Raised says these brackets are recommended for a dual-row bar but can fit a single-row bar with a 32-inch mounting width. For pods on the hood, the Fishbone Offroad Hood Light Pod Bracket is listed for 2005-2015 and holds standard LED pod lights.
3rd gen Tacoma (2016-2023)
The 3rd gen has the deepest selection. Diode Dynamics offers the SS30 Stealth Lightbar Kit, which Diode says mounts one 30-inch bar in the lower grille opening on existing mounting points with no cutting or drilling and includes a plug-and-play harness. Cali Raised LED covers the lower bumper with a hidden kit and a flush slim kit, plus an upper grille bracket kit for 32-inch bars. If you run the Cali Raised Stealth Bumper, the Second 32" Light Bar with Relocation Mounts adds a second 32-inch bar position, and the listing names a 32-inch light bar mount, relocation mounts and hardware, a single-leg harness and a standard switch.
4th gen Tacoma (2024+)
The 4th gen needs its own brackets. KC HiLiTES says so directly in the Gravity Titan Overhead Light Bar Kit for 2024-2026 Toyota Tacoma, which carries a 50-inch bar and requires drilling. For the front end, Diode Dynamics offers a TRD Pro grille kit built around an SS20 bar, a stealth bumper kit built around an SS10 bar, and an SS5 Grille CrossLink kit that links four SS5 pods across the grille. Cali Raised LED makes a 32-inch Lo Pro grille kit. Roof visor housings from Ecoological and AJT Design hold light modules inside an aero shell, and Ecoological says its PRO visor mounts with 3M auto-grade tape with no drilling.
| Generation | Roof | Bumper / grille | Ditch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2nd gen 2005-2015 | KC Gravity Titan 50", Baja Designs 50" Arc and 8XL, Cali Raised 52" curved | Cali Raised 32" hidden and flush brackets | Cali Raised, Morimoto, Rago, KC brackets |
| 3rd gen 2016-2023 | Same 2005-2023 roof kits | Diode Dynamics SS30 Stealth, Cali Raised 32" hidden, flush slim and upper grille | Cali Raised, Morimoto, Rago, RCI, KC, ORACLE |
| 4th gen 2024+ | KC Gravity Titan 50" (drilling), C4 rack with 40" cutout, roof visors | Diode Dynamics SS20 TRD Pro grille, SS10 bumper, SS5 CrossLink; Cali Raised 32" Lo Pro grille | DV8, Cali Raised, Rago, SXTH Element, KC |
Roof and roof rack light bars
A roof bar is usually the hardest install and the most likely to add wind noise. Check three things:
- Drilling. KC HiLiTES says its 2024-2026 overhead kit requires drilling. Baja Designs says its 2005-2023 roof kits require drilling, and the OnX6+ Arc listing names the front mounting bolts. KC says its 2005-2023 brackets bolt to factory mounting locations.
- Roof rack conflict. Baja Designs says its 2005-2023 Tacoma roof kits will not work with a roof rack.
- What is in the box. The KC Gravity Titan kits list the 50-inch bar, light covers, a wiring kit with a 3-position switch and the brackets. The Baja Designs OnX6+ Arc 50" Light Bar Roof Kit lists the bar, two roof brackets, a wiring harness, a wire hider kit and hardware, and Baja rates the bar at 32,070 lumens.
If you run a rack, a rack-integrated mount avoids the conflict. The C4 Fabrication Tacoma Roof Rack with Optional Light Bar Mount for 2024-2026 offers a fairing with a 40-inch light bar cutout, and C4 says the rack is bolt-on with no drilling. Cali Raised LED sells Premium Roof Rack Front Light Bar Kits for 2005-2023 and 2024+ trucks, which Cali Raised says are designed to integrate with its own premium roof rack and list mounting brackets, a wiring harness and a switch option. Our Tacoma roof rack guide covers the racks themselves.
Bumper and behind-the-grille light bars
Low-mounted bars keep the roofline clean and stay out of the wind. On the factory bumper, Cali Raised LED uses two styles. Its hidden kit fits inside the lower bumper opening and keeps the original grille face in place. Its flush kit for 2016-2023 sits at the grille opening with the bar exposed, and Cali Raised says that version involves modifications to the grille face. The 32" Lower Bumper Hidden LED Light Bar Kit lists brackets, a 32-inch dual-row bar in spot or combo beam, and a wiring harness, with an OEM switch option. Its title says 2016-2023, but the description says the brackets fit 2016-2022, so 2023 owners should confirm fitment on the product page before ordering.
Behind-the-grille kits work similarly. The Cali Raised 32" Upper Grille LED Light Bar Brackets Kit for 2016-2023 says it works with most common LED light bars. On the 4th gen, the 32" Lo Pro Grille LED Light Bar Kit for 2024+ Toyota Tacoma installs with no modifications per Cali Raised, but does not fit the Limited grille, and trucks with the 360 camera can fit only one bar. Diode Dynamics offers the TRD Pro Grille Lightbar Kit and the Stealth Bumper Lightbar Kit for 2024-2026, each available as brackets only or as a complete kit with the bar. If you are replacing the bumper, many aftermarket bumpers have their own light bar provisions; see our Tacoma front bumper guide.
Ditch lights and hood mounts
Ditch lights are pods mounted near the base of the A-pillar, usually aimed outward to light the edges of the trail. They are a secondary add-on to a light bar, not a replacement. Cali Raised LED says its 2024+ ditch kit is best aimed at about a 45 degree angle away from the truck. The DV8 Offroad 2024-2026 Toyota Tacoma Ditch Light Brackets hold up to two 3-inch pods per side and are bolt-on with no cutting or drilling, per DV8. For earlier trucks, Cali Raised, Morimoto, Rago Fabrication, KC HiLiTES and ORACLE Lighting all list generation-specific brackets or complete kits. Rago also makes a 2nd & 3rd Gen Tacoma Hood Light Bracket for rock lights under the hood, which Rago says does not fit the TRD. For beam patterns, read ditch lights: spot vs flood.
Wiring, switches and power
A light bar draws real current, so it should run through a fused harness with a relay rather than tapping into a factory circuit. Many Tacoma kits include a harness: Diode Dynamics lists a plug-and-play harness with the SS30 Stealth kit and says the SS5 CrossLink kit runs from the factory aux switch bank using the included harness. KC HiLiTES includes a wiring kit with a 3-position switch. Bracket-only listings generally leave wiring to you.
Check the current draw before you plan the circuit. Baja Designs rates its 50-inch Arc bar at 278W and 21.7A, while Diode Dynamics lists 5.98A to 8.20A at 12.8V for the SS20 kit. If you are adding several lights, a switch panel or power manager keeps things tidy, and Cali Raised LED makes a Bolt On Relay Holder that holds up to four relays. For 2024-2026 trucks, Baja Designs offers sPOD power management kits. See our Tacoma lighting upgrade guide for fog lights and headlights.
A note on the law: many states limit when auxiliary off-road lights can be used on public roads, and some require roof or bumper bars to be covered while driving on pavement. Rules vary by state, so check yours before you wire a bar to run with your high beams.

Frequently asked questions
What size light bar fits a Tacoma?
It depends on the mount, not the truck alone. Most lower bumper and grille kits for 2005-2023 trucks on NVMOS are built around 30-inch to 32-inch bars, the Cali Raised 2024+ Lo Pro grille kit holds a 32-inch bar, the Diode Dynamics 2024-2026 kits use an SS20 (TRD Pro grille) or SS10 (bumper), and the KC HiLiTES Gravity Titan and Baja Designs OnX6+ Arc roof kits carry 50-inch bars. Buy the bracket first, then match the bar to the length that bracket lists.
Do I have to drill my roof to mount a light bar?
Some kits require it. KC HiLiTES says its 2024-2026 Gravity Titan overhead kit requires drilling, and Baja Designs says its 2005-2023 Tacoma roof kits require drilling. KC says its 2005-2023 kit bolts to factory mounting locations. Check the install notes on each product page before you order.
Can I run a roof light bar with a roof rack?
Not with every kit. Baja Designs says its 2005-2023 Tacoma roof kits will not work with a roof rack. If you already run a rack, look at a rack-integrated option such as the C4 Fabrication 4th Gen rack with a 40-inch light bar cutout or a Cali Raised Premium Roof Rack Front Light Bar Kit, which Cali Raised designed to work with its own roof rack.
Is a wiring harness included?
Many Tacoma kits include one, but not all. The Diode Dynamics SS30 Stealth kit, the KC HiLiTES Gravity Titan kits, the Baja Designs roof kits and the Cali Raised 32-inch lower bumper hidden kit for the 3rd gen all list a harness. Bracket-only listings generally do not, so read the included items on the product page.
Are light bars legal to use on the street?
Rules vary by state, and many states restrict when auxiliary off-road lights can be used on public roads, how many can be on at once, and whether they must be covered. Treat roof and bumper bars as off-road lights unless your state says otherwise, and check your local laws before you run them on pavement.
Will a grille or bumper light bar fit my trim?
Not always. Cali Raised says its 32-inch Lo Pro grille kit for the 2024+ Tacoma does not fit the Limited grille, and that trucks with the 360 camera can fit only one light bar. The Diode Dynamics TRD Pro grille kit is named for the TRD Pro grille. Confirm your grille and camera setup before ordering.
