Tacoma rocker panels sit low, right where rocks, stumps and ledges hit first, and they are expensive to repair once they fold. Rock sliders put a steel rail between the trail and the body so the truck can rest on the slider instead of the sheet metal. This guide covers mounting style, angle, step plates, kick-outs and fitment by generation, cab and bed.

Short answer: Most Tacoma owners should start with a frame-mounted, bolt-on slider bought for their exact generation, cab and bed length. On a 2005-2023 truck, RCI, C4 Fabrication, Backwoods Adventure Mods and Cali Raised all have options, and Cali Raised offers weld-on for owners who want it. On a 2024 or newer Tacoma, buy a 4th gen specific slider and check the hybrid and long bed notes before you order.

If you are new to sliders in general, our rock sliders buying guide covers the basics across makes. This page is Tacoma only.

Rock sliders vs side steps vs rocker guards

Rock sliders are built to carry the weight of the truck. Frame-mounted designs such as RCI's and DV8's bolt to the frame, so when the truck drops onto a rock, the load goes into the frame instead of the rocker panel. RCI says its sliders can support the whole side of the truck for hi-lift lifting or sliding on rock.

Side steps are mainly for getting in and out. The DV8 OE Plus Side Steps for the 2024-2026 Double Cab bolt to the body and pinch weld, and DV8 says they deflect branches and small rocks thrown by the tires. That is useful, but it is not the same as a slider you can drop the truck onto.

Rocker overlays protect paint, not metal. The Tufskinz Rocker Panel Protection Overlays for the 2016-2023 Tacoma are a four-piece TUF-LINER film kit that takes gravel and trail rash instead of your factory finish. Tufskinz also makes a 2005-2015 version.

Bolt-on vs weld-on Tacoma rock sliders

Every slider in this guide is offered bolt-on, and most of the listings say the hardware is included. RCI says its sliders install with no drilling using basic hand tools, with grade 5 and grade 8 hardware included where applicable. C4 Fabrication describes its Rock Runner sliders as a true 100% bolt-on install with no cutting or welding. DV8 estimates about two hours for its 4th gen sliders.

DV8 notes its Boatside sliders can come off for touch-ups after trail damage.

Weld-on sliders are fixed to the frame permanently. That takes a welder or a shop. On the Tacoma, the Cali Raised Trail Edition Rock Sliders for 2005-2023 Tacoma are the option we carry with a choice of bolt-on or weld-on. Per the listing, the weld-on version has a location feature so you can bolt the slider in place first and then weld it, instead of setting it up on jack stands and wood blocks.

Where to start: if you are not already set up to weld, buy bolt-on. It is the simpler job, and it can come off later.

Slider angle, step plates and kick-outs

Angle. An angled slider rises toward the body, which tucks the outer rail up and out of the way. A flat slider is easier to stand on. RCI offers 20 degrees as standard and a 5 degree option, and recommends 5 degrees if you add its tread plate. Backwoods Adventure Mods builds its sliders at a flat 0 degree angle and says it aimed for a balance of slider and step.

Step plates. A plate across the top of the slider gives boots a flat surface and blocks some tire throw. Backwoods uses a bolt-on aluminum top plate in a bedliner-style textured finish which Backwoods says will not rust from boots. C4 Fabrication's 4th gen sliders use step plates with stainless steel traction inserts, and its 2005-2023 slider has removable step plates to make painting easier. RCI sells its dimpled tread plate as an option, and separately as the RCI Rock Slider Top Tread Plate (05+ Tacoma Short-Bed, Driver) for RCI sliders with the mounting points.

Kick-outs. A kick-out angles the back of the slider outward ahead of the rear tire. Backwoods says the rear kickout on its 2005-2023 slider helps pivot the rear tire away from rocks and trees and gives you a wide step for reaching into the bed. RCI uses a low profile kick-out. Cali Raised lets you choose kick-out or no kick-out on its 2024+ Step Edition sliders and says it does not charge more for one.

Tacoma rock sliders by generation

Generation is the first filter.

Generation Years Sliders listed for it Cab and bed notes from the listings
2nd gen 2005-2015 RCI, C4 Fabrication Rock Runner, plus the 2005-2023 sliders from C4, Backwoods and Cali Raised RCI splits short bed (Access and Double Cab) from Double Cab long bed, 4WD. C4 lists Access Cab long bed and Double Cab short bed.
3rd gen 2016-2023 RCI, C4 Fabrication Rock Runner, DV8 Boatside, plus the 2005-2023 sliders RCI splits Access Cab 6 ft bed and Double Cab 5 ft bed from Double Cab long bed, 4WD. DV8 Boatside is 5 ft bed only and listed for 2016-2022.
4th gen 2024+ RCI, C4 Fabrication, Backwoods, DV8, Cali Raised C4 is Double Cab short bed only. DV8 is Double Cab only and excludes the 6 ft bed. RCI splits Double Cab short bed and long bed. Backwoods and Cali Raised cover hybrids.

2nd gen Tacoma (2005-2015)

RCI sells two 2nd gen sliders: the RCI Rock Sliders - 2005-2015 Toyota Tacoma (Short Bed), for 4WD Access Cab and Double Cab trucks in the short bed configuration, and a separate Double Cab Long Bed version. The C4 Fabrication Rock Runner Sliders / 2nd Gen fit Access Cab long bed and Double Cab short bed trucks, and C4 says other cab and bed combinations are not covered.

3rd gen Tacoma (2016-2023)

The RCI Rock Sliders - 2016-2023 (Access Cab and Double Cab) fit 4WD Access Cab trucks with the 6 ft bed and Double Cab trucks with the 5 ft bed. The RCI Double Cab Long Bed version is for the 6 ft Double Cab only. The DV8 Boatside Rock Sliders bolt to the frame rails and frame-to-body mounts, and DV8 says that brings deflection down to near zero. They are listed for the 5 ft bed only. The title says 2016-2023 but the description says 2016-2022, so confirm on the product page if you have a 2023.

2005-2023 sliders that cover both

Several makers build one slider for both the 2nd and 3rd gen frame. The Backwoods Adventure Mods Rock Sliders 2nd and 3rd Gen use 1.75 inch DOM tubing with gusseted corners and come in a short bed version (Double Cab short bed and Access Cab long bed, 4WD and 2WD) and a Double Cab long bed version. The C4 Fabrication Tacoma Rock Sliders / 2nd and 3rd Gen fit Access Cab long bed and Double Cab short bed trucks and use a 3x2 inch rectangle main rail, at 75 pounds per slider per C4. Cali Raised's Trail Edition covers both generations with the bolt-on or weld-on choice, but its listing does not state cab or bed fitment, so confirm before ordering.

4th gen Tacoma (2024+)

The 4th gen has the most variation by cab, bed and powertrain. The RCI Rock Sliders - 2024+ (Double Cab Short Bed) are listed as verified on TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro short bed models and also fit hybrids, while the RCI Double Cab Long Bed version is listed for the 2024 TRD 4WD non-hybrid model only. The title says 2024+, so confirm fitment on a 2025 or newer truck. The C4 Fabrication 4th Gen Rock Sliders are for Double Cab short bed trucks with the iForce 4-cylinder turbo or iForce MAX hybrid. The DV8 2024-2026 Double Cab Rock Sliders are for four-door trucks and are not compatible with the 6 ft bed. The Backwoods 4th Gen Rock Sliders and the Cali Raised Step Edition Rock Sliders for 2024+ are listed for hybrid and non-hybrid trucks.

Cab and bed length: the fitment detail that trips people up

A slider runs between the front and rear wheels, so its length depends on wheelbase, and the Tacoma's wheelbase depends on cab and bed. That is why a Double Cab short bed and an Access Cab long bed often share a slider, while a Double Cab long bed needs its own. Backwoods and RCI follow that split on 2005-2023 trucks, and the C4 sliders cover only the Access Cab long bed and Double Cab short bed.

Before you order, check three things on your truck:

  • Cab: Access Cab (two small rear doors) or Double Cab (four full doors).
  • Bed: 5 ft short bed or 6 ft long bed.
  • Drive and powertrain: several RCI listings say 4WD, and on the 4th gen some listings call out hybrid or non-hybrid.

Install and ordering notes

Coating. Bare steel rusts. C4 Fabrication says raw sliders must be painted or powder coated before installation, and offers its own powder coat. RCI offers satin black powdercoat over epoxy primer or bare metal. Backwoods includes a black textured powder coat. Cali Raised lets you mix raw, powder coat and bedliner finishes on its 2024+ sliders.

Lead times and freight. Most RCI sliders are made to order and ship on a lead time, and RCI long bed sliders ship via FedEx Freight. The Cali Raised 2024+ Step Edition ships freight, and both Cali Raised listings carry a 15% fee if a slider order is cancelled after it is placed, because each set is made for your vehicle. Check current lead times before you plan a trip around the install.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need rock sliders or just side steps on my Tacoma?

If you drive rocky trails, ledges or tight wooded tracks, rock sliders are the part built to take the weight of the truck and keep it off the rocker panels and doors. Side steps such as the DV8 OE Plus steps help you climb in and deflect light debris, but they are not sold as full rock sliders. If the truck mostly sees gravel roads, rocker film like the Tufskinz overlays guards the paint from chips but adds no structural protection.

Are bolt-on Tacoma rock sliders strong enough?

Bolt-on is the norm here: every slider in this guide is offered bolt-on. The designs from RCI, DV8 and C4's 4th gen slider bolt to the frame rather than the body, and RCI says its sliders can carry the whole side of the truck for hi-lift lifting or sliding on rock. Weld-on mounting is offered on the Cali Raised Trail Edition for 2005-2023 trucks for owners who want the slider permanently fixed to the frame.

Will 2nd gen sliders fit my 3rd gen Tacoma?

Some do. C4 Fabrication, Backwoods Adventure Mods and Cali Raised all list a 2005-2023 slider that covers both generations. RCI, on the other hand, sells separate 2005-2015 and 2016-2023 listings. Always buy the listing for your exact years, cab and bed, and confirm on the product page.

Do 2nd or 3rd gen sliders fit a 2024 Tacoma?

No slider in this guide is listed for both the 3rd gen and the 4th gen. The 2024 and newer Tacoma has its own listings from RCI, C4 Fabrication, Backwoods Adventure Mods, DV8 and Cali Raised. Buy the 4th gen version.

What does a kick-out do on a rock slider?

A kick-out angles the rear of the slider outward ahead of the rear tire. Backwoods says its kickout helps pivot the rear tire away from rocks and trees and doubles as a step for reaching into the bed. RCI uses a low profile kick-out, and Cali Raised offers its 2024+ Step Edition sliders with or without one.

Do bare metal sliders need paint before install?

Yes. C4 Fabrication says its raw sliders must be painted or powder coated before installation to prevent rust, and bare steel from any maker will rust if left uncoated. RCI and Cali Raised also offer bare or raw finishes. If you do not want to coat them yourself, choose a powder coat option on the listing.

Will rock sliders fit a Tacoma hybrid?

It depends on the listing. Cali Raised lists its 2024+ Step Edition sliders for all models including hybrids, Backwoods lists both versions of its 4th gen slider for hybrid and non-hybrid trucks, and RCI's 2024+ Double Cab short bed slider also fits hybrid models. RCI's 2024+ Double Cab long bed slider is listed for the non-hybrid model only, so call before ordering if you have a hybrid long bed.
