The Toyota Tacoma has one of the deepest aftermarkets of any midsize truck, which is great until you try to decide where to start. This hub page breaks Tacoma accessories and mods into eight categories, explains what each one does, points to a starting product or two for the 2nd gen (2005–2015), 3rd gen (2016–2023) and 4th gen (2024+), and links to our deeper guide for each category.

Short answer: Start with the accessory that fixes the problem you actually have. For most Tacoma owners that means lighting for night driving, armor (sliders and skid plates) for trail use, a modest suspension lift for bigger tires, and roof or bed racks for gear. Match every part to your generation: 2nd gen (2005–2015), 3rd gen (2016–2023) or 4th gen (2024+). Parts rarely cross generations.

Know your Tacoma generation before you shop

Almost every Tacoma accessory is built for a specific generation, and some are narrower than that. The 2nd gen ran 2005–2015 with a front-end refresh for 2012, so many lighting and bumper parts split into 2005–2011 and 2012–2015 versions. The 3rd gen ran 2016–2023 and shares frame-mounted parts like sliders, skids and some racks with the 2nd gen. The 4th gen (2024+) is a clean-sheet truck, so expect its parts to be listed separately.

Generation Years What to watch for Example starting point
2nd gen 2005–2015 2012 refresh splits many lighting and bumper parts; check cab and bed length for bed parts Morimoto XB Hybrid headlights (2012–2015)
3rd gen 2016–2023 Widest selection; some parts also cover 2005–2015; 5 ft and 6 ft beds take different bed parts ICON Stage 1 suspension system
4th gen 2024+ New platform; hybrid and non-hybrid, and some trims, can need different parts SXTH Element 2024+ recovery point kit

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by generation name alone. Read the exact year range in the product title. A part listed for 2012–2015 will not fit a 2009 truck.
  • Ignoring cab, bed and drivetrain. Seat delete systems are split by Access Cab and Double Cab, bed parts by 5 ft and 6 ft bed, and some 4th gen parts by hybrid and non-hybrid.
  • Stacking weight without checking payload. Steel bumpers, sliders, racks, drawers and a tent can add hundreds of pounds. Check the payload rating on your door jamb sticker.
  • Buying out of order. A heavy front bumper and winch changes how much front spring you need, so it pays to plan armor and suspension together.

Lighting: often the first mod that pays off

You use your headlights every time you drive after dark, so lighting is one of the most practical places to start. Full replacement headlight housings tend to make the biggest difference; fog light replacements and A-pillar ditch lights come next. Where to start by generation:

  • 3rd gen (2016–2023). The Morimoto XB Evo LED headlights use dual Bi-LED projectors, a heated lens, and selectable white or amber DRLs. Morimoto lists them as DOT and FMVSS108 compliant in standard form and plug-and-play with the factory wiring.
  • 2nd gen (2012–2015). The Morimoto XB Hybrid LED headlights pair LED projectors with reflector DRLs and plug into the factory Toyota connector. They are listed for 2012–2015 only.
  • 4th gen (2024+). The Cali Raised LED fog light replacement kit swaps the factory fogs for two 6-inch light bars in amber or white, using existing mounting points.

Lighting laws vary by state, so check yours before running auxiliary lights on the road. Our Tacoma lighting upgrade guide covers headlights, tail lights, fogs and ditch lights generation by generation.

Armor: bumpers, rock sliders and skid plates

Armor is about protecting the parts of the truck that hit things.

Front bumpers

An aftermarket front bumper improves approach angle, adds a winch mount and gives you places to put lights. Hybrid and covert styles keep some of the factory plastic or sit low behind it; full-width steel bumpers add more protection and more weight. The C4 Fabrication Hybrid front bumper (2016–2023) needs the factory plastic bumper trimmed, fits most 8,000–12,000 lb winches, and has a pocket for a 30-inch single-row light bar. For 2024–2026 trucks, the CBI Covert front bumper is a lower-profile option. More in the Tacoma front bumper guide.

Rock sliders

Sliders bolt or weld to the frame and protect the rocker panels, which are easy to crush on rocks and expensive to fix. The CBI Overland bolt-on rock sliders are listed for 2005–2023 trucks. For the 4th gen, the DV8 2024–2026 Double Cab rock sliders use 4mm tube and plate steel with a low-profile design. Check cab length before ordering. See the rock sliders buying guide.

Skid plates

Skid plates protect what hangs lowest: the front end, transmission, transfer case and fuel tank. The front skid is the usual first piece. For 2024–2026 trucks, the DV8 front skid plate is 3.5mm steel, bolts to four mounting points, protects the intercooler area, and works with the factory front bumper. The Tacoma skid plates guide covers full systems.

Suspension and lift kits

A suspension upgrade changes how the truck rides, how much wheel travel it has, and what tire size it clears. Most Tacoma lifts are modest, usually up to about 3 inches, using adjustable front coilovers and new rear shocks, sometimes with new leaf springs. Bigger lifts often need upper control arms or other parts to keep geometry in range.

  • 2nd and 3rd gen. The ICON Stage 1 suspension system covers 2005–2015 trucks with 0–3.5 inches of lift and 2016–2023 trucks with 0–2.75 inches, using 2.5-inch internal reservoir coilovers up front and ICON 2.0 aluminum shocks in the rear.
  • 4th gen. The ICON 2024–2026 Stage 1 suspension system provides 1.25–3 inches of front lift and includes differential drop brackets and polyurethane differential bushings.

Plan on an alignment after any lift, and expect a leveling kit to ride differently from a full system. Our Tacoma lift kit guide and leveling kit vs lift kit guide go deeper.

Roof racks and bed racks

Racks are how a Tacoma carries more than its bed holds. A roof rack keeps the bed free and suits lighter, flatter gear like traction boards, a shovel or an awning. A bed rack carries heavier, bulkier loads like a rooftop tent over the bed.

Check roof load ratings, bed length and whether you run a bed cover before ordering. See the Tacoma roof rack guide and Tacoma bed rack guide.

Interior, storage and exterior styling

Interior and storage

Storage mods turn dead space into organized space. In the cab, a seat delete replaces the rear seat with a flat platform for a fridge, a dog bed or drawers. The Goose Gear Version 2 seat delete for 2005–2023 Double Cab is sold as 40% and 60% sides; Goose Gear notes the 60% side does not work with a factory subwoofer and offers a separate version that keeps the factory back wall. For 2024+ trucks, the Cali Raised LED center console MOLLE panel is 12 gauge steel for the driver side only. In the bed, plate and drawer systems like the Goose Gear 4th gen bed plate build a flat, secure floor; that one requires drilling through the bed. More in the truck bed storage guide and Goose Gear plate systems article.

Emblems, letters and chrome delete

Tufskinz letter inserts seat into the stamped TACOMA tailgate letters with 3M adhesive and no drilling: there is a 2016–2023 set and a 2024–2026 set. For chrome, the AJT Design BumperShellz rear bumper covers (2016–2023) are TPO and ABS covers that install over the factory metal bumper with 3M tape; they are a cover, not a bumper replacement. See the emblems and badges guide and chrome delete guide.

Recovery, power and camping

Recovery

Before you need a recovery, you need somewhere safe to attach a strap. The factory tie-downs are not recovery points. For 2024+ trucks, the SXTH Element recovery point kit adds front and rear billet aluminum points that bolt on and fit 3/4-inch shackles and soft shackles. For any year Tacoma with factory bed rails, the Rago bed rail recovery board mounts hold traction boards using MaxTrax mounting pins. Our traction boards guide covers how to use them.

Power and camping

Fridges, lights and compressors add electrical load, and a second battery keeps the starting battery for starting. For 2016–2023 trucks, the Genesis Offroad dual battery system requires Group 34 batteries (sold separately; the listing says Optima batteries are not compatible), and the Rago secondary battery box holds a Group 34 or 35 Odyssey battery on the passenger side. For airing back up after the trail, the Rago 3rd gen Wifey Air system bundle packages an under-hood compressor mount with an ARB twin compressor. Compare approaches in power station vs dual battery and airing down and onboard air, and see the full build path in the Tacoma overland build guide.

Frequently asked questions

What are the first mods to do on a Tacoma?

Most owners start with whatever fixes a daily annoyance: headlights if night driving is the weak spot, tires and a modest lift if the truck sees trails, or bed and cab storage if it hauls gear. Protection like sliders and skid plates comes next for anyone driving rocky trails.

What accessories fit a 3rd gen Tacoma?

The 3rd gen ran 2016–2023, and it has the widest parts selection of any Tacoma generation. Look for 2016–2023 in the product title; some parts, like the CBI rock sliders and ICON Stage 1 system, are listed for 2005–2023 and cover the 2nd gen too.

Do 3rd gen Tacoma accessories fit a 4th gen?

Generally no. The 2024+ Tacoma is a new truck with a different body, frame and front end, so bumpers, racks, skid plates, suspension and lighting are almost always generation-specific. Buy parts listed for 2024+ or 2024–2026.

What are good 4th gen Tacoma accessories to start with?

Common starting points for a 2024+ truck are recovery points, a front skid plate, fog light replacements and bed or roof racks. We carry 4th gen parts from SXTH Element, DV8 Offroad, CBI Offroad Fab, Cali Raised LED, ICON and Goose Gear, with more being added.

Do I need an alignment after a Tacoma lift kit?

Yes, plan on an alignment after any suspension change, and recheck it after the suspension settles. Some lifts also call for parts like upper control arms or differential drop brackets to keep geometry in range; the ICON 2024–2026 Stage 1 system, for example, includes diff drop brackets.

Are Tacoma rock sliders worth it?

If you drive trails with rocks, ruts or ledges, sliders protect the rocker panels that are expensive to repair and easy to crush. For pavement and gravel roads they are mostly a step and a look, so a skid plate or lighting upgrade may come first.

Will a roof rack and a bed rack work together on a Tacoma?

Yes, many owners run both, often with a tent on the bed rack and lighter gear up top. Check the dynamic load rating of your roof and the payload rating on your door sticker, since racks, tents and gear add up quickly.
