Toyota 4Runner Roof Racks: Full vs 3/4, Fitment and Load
A 4Runner roof rack turns the roof into usable space for a tent, recovery boards, lights or water, but racks are cut for one generation and one roof, so the first decision is your model year. This guide covers full-length, 3/4 and crossbar setups for the 3rd gen (1996–2002), 4th gen (2003–2009), 5th gen (2010–2024) and 6th gen (2025 and newer), plus how they mount, what the load ratings mean, and which accessories bolt on.
Short answer: Buy a rack listed for your generation: 1996–2002, 2003–2009, 2010–2024 or 2025+. Choose a full-length platform for rooftop tents, long gear or a roof deck, a 3/4 rack if you carry less and want less weight and wind area, and crossbars if you only need occasional cargo. Many 5th and 6th gen racks we carry list bolt-on installs at the factory roof points; check each listing for load rating and sunroof notes.
Full-length vs 3/4 vs crossbars: pick the rack style first
Before brand, decide how much of the roof you need. That choice drives weight, wind noise and what you can mount.
| Style | Covers | Good for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-length platform | Most of the roof, front to rear | Rooftop tents, awnings, decking panels, long items, roof light bars | Heaviest and most wind area; costs more |
| 3/4 platform | Front three-quarters of the roof | Boards, cases, a light bar, smaller loads; leaves the rear roof clear | Less space and crossbar spread for a full-size tent |
| Half rack | Roughly the front half | A light bar and a few small items | Least space; ask us what is available for your year |
| Crossbars or load bars | Two or more bars across the roof | Cargo boxes, bikes, kayaks, some tents | No platform surface; fewer mounting points |
A few practical points:
- Tents need spread. Tent makers specify bar spacing for the base. A full-length platform makes that easy; a short rack may not reach.
- Short racks save weight. A 3/4 rack weighs less and has less frontal and top area. Prinsu makes 3/4 racks for 2010–2024 and 1995.5–2002 4Runners.
- Bars first, platform later. Eezi-Awn K9 load bar kits include four feet or legs and a load bar set, with an 8mm T-slot top and bottom for adding gear later.
4Runner roof racks by generation
Racks are not shared across generations, so buy by model year and check the listing's years against your registration.
3rd gen (1996–2002)
Prinsu lists Full and 3/4 racks for the 1995.5–2002 truck and a Prinsu Pro Full rack for 1996–2002. Prinsu says the Pro installs without drilling into the factory mounting points and offers a standard wind deflector or a light bar cutout. Eezi-Awn's K9 roof rack kit for the 3rd gen replaces the factory rack, leaves the sunroof uncovered and needs no drilling, per Eezi-Awn, and comes in a 1250mm (49") width and two lengths.
4th gen (2003–2009)
Options include the Prinsu rack and the Prinsu Pro Full rack for 2003–2009, a Prinsu accessory panel for the 4th gen, and Eezi-Awn K9 kits. Eezi-Awn says the 4th gen K9 roof rack needs no drilling at any size and comes in a 1250mm (49") width and five lengths, so you can choose how much of the roof to cover.
5th gen (2010–2024)
Prinsu makes a Full Non-Drill rack, a 3/4 rack and a Prinsu Pro Full rack. Rago Fabrication offers solid front fairing and light pocket versions, C4 Fabrication offers a flat or 40-inch light bar cutout fairing, KC HiLiTES has the Platform One (rack alone or with 360° lighting), and Cali Raised LED has Premium and Economy racks plus cross bars. Eezi-Awn K9 kits for the 5th gen come in a 1250mm (49") width and five lengths.
6th gen (2025 and newer)
Listings include the Prinsu Original and Prinsu Pro (2025), Rago 2025+ racks with a solid or light pocket fairing, the C4 Fabrication 6th gen rack, the DV8 Offroad Spec Series (2025–2026), KC HiLiTES Platform One (2025+ rack, and a 2025–2026 kit with 360° lighting) and the Cali Raised LED Premium for 2025+. Prinsu also lists a 2025 ladder and accessory panels. Keeping the factory rack? Tufskinz makes side rail overlays for the 2025–2026 factory roof rack.

How 4Runner roof racks mount: factory points, rails and drilling
Most 4Runner platform racks bolt into the factory roof mounting points, the threaded locations under the factory rails or trim. What the listings say:
- Prinsu Full Non-Drill (2010–2024). Bolts to the factory mounting points with no drilling.
- Rago (2010–2024 and 2025+). Mounts to the factory roof points; Rago describes the 2025+ racks as fully bolt-on.
- C4 Fabrication (5th and 6th gen). Bolt-on at the factory mounting locations.
- KC HiLiTES Platform One with 360° lighting. Bolt-on, no drilling, for both 2010–2024 and 2025–2026.
- Cali Raised LED Premium. Described as 100% bolt-on with no major modifications.
- Cali Raised LED cross bars (2010–2024). Built from 10ga steel and made to work with the factory roof rails, sold as a pair.
If a listing does not mention drilling, ask us before you order. Torque hardware to spec and recheck it after the first few hundred miles.
Load ratings: dynamic vs static
Roof rack ratings come in two numbers. Dynamic is what the rack can carry while the vehicle is moving. Static is what it can hold parked, which is what matters for a rooftop tent with people in it. Only some listings publish numbers:
- Prinsu Full Non-Drill, 2010–2024: 600 lb dynamic, 1,000 lb static.
- Eezi-Awn K9 roof rack kits (3rd, 4th and 5th gen): Eezi-Awn says a static capacity of 1,000 lb is possible and dynamic capacity is in the range of 500 lb.
The rack rating is only half the picture. Toyota publishes a roof load limit for the vehicle, and your rack, crossbars, tent and gear all count against it while driving. Check your owner's manual, use the lower number, and remember that weight up high changes how the truck handles off-camber.
Sunroof, antenna, height and wind noise
What the listings say:
- Sunroof. Rago says its 2010–2024 and 2025+ racks keep the factory sunroof working; C4 says the same for its 5th and 6th gen racks. Eezi-Awn says the 3rd gen K9 leaves the sunroof uncovered.
- Antenna and satellite. Rago says its racks do not interfere with factory antenna or satellite reception.
- Height. C4 says its racks add only 1/4" above the factory antenna. Rago says its 5th gen racks add minimal height above the highest OEM antenna point. Eezi-Awn offers a low K9 version for the 5th gen on 40mm feet, 4" high at the measured point, and notes it can limit some side-mounted accessories.
- Wind noise. Rago's front fairings include edge trim that protects paint and seals to the roof, and Cali Raised LED Premium racks use an adjustable LED wind deflector that covers the light bar when not in use.
Recheck garage clearance once a tent or box is on top.
Light mounts, fairings, awning brackets and other accessories
Match accessories to the rack brand, since many are made for one system.
Lighting
- Front light pockets and cutouts. Rago light pocket racks take one 40-inch curved or straight bar or up to ten 3-inch pods. C4 offers a 40-inch cutout fairing. DV8's 2025–2026 cutout fairing, made only for its own rack, takes a 40-inch straight bar (42" mount-to-mount), dual 20-inch bars or up to ten 3-inch pods.
- Round light mounts. Rago makes mounts for six 6-inch RIGID round lights or six Baja Designs LP6 lights. Rago recommends the RIGID mount on the solid front fairing rack.
- Side and rear lights. Rago's Illuminator bolts to the rack side panels for Baja Designs S2 or rock lights. The DV8 Spec Series rack has rear crossmember slots for up to a 40-inch rear bar.
- Complete kits. KC HiLiTES Platform One 360° kits include a Gravity Titan 50" bar, four SideCast lights and a wiring kit with a 3-position switch. Cali Raised LED says its 360 lighting package includes a harness for the front bar only, so plan on a 12V shop for the side lights.
For headlights, fogs and ditch lights, see our 4Runner lighting upgrade guide and the LED pod lights buying guide. Roof light rules vary by state; check yours.
Awnings, water, boards and access
- Awning brackets. Rago's 1996–2024 canopy/awning mounts are steel, include hardware, and fit most aftermarket awnings except the Rhino Rack Batwing. The listing also says they do not fit the factory tubing roof rack, so confirm your rails with us first.
- Water. Rago's WaterPort mount works with Prinsu, Front Runner, Echotune and Wood Grain Warrior racks (not Gobi or Baja racks) and does not include the WaterPort mount plate.
- Traction boards. Cali Raised LED's steel traction board mount fits most racks with aluminum extrusion crossbars. See our traction boards guide.
- Decking. Rago decking panels add a flat molle surface with L-Track mounts; Rago says up to seven pairs fit its 2025+ rack.
Mistakes to avoid before you order
- Ordering by generation name only. Confirm the exact years on the listing, and note that some ranges start mid-year, like Prinsu's 1995.5–2002.
- Mixing brands without checking. Fairings, light mounts and panels are usually made for one rack. DV8's cutout fairing, for example, fits only DV8's 2025–2026 rack.
- Ignoring the roof load limit. A high static rating does not raise what the vehicle can carry while moving.
- Forgetting the wiring. Plan the harness, switch and wire route before the rack goes on.
- Skipping lead times. Prinsu Pro racks for the 3rd gen were listed at about 5 weeks to build. Check current lead times before you plan a trip around delivery.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best roof rack for a 5th gen 4Runner?
There is no single best one; it depends on what you carry. For rooftop tents, pick a full-length platform with a published static rating, like the Prinsu Full Non-Drill (1,000 lb static per Prinsu). For a roof light bar, look at the Rago, C4 or Cali Raised LED racks.
Do you have to drill to install a 4Runner roof rack?
Many do not. Several racks list bolt-on installs at the factory roof points, and the Prinsu Full Non-Drill, the 3rd gen Prinsu Pro and the 3rd and 4th gen Eezi-Awn K9 say no drilling. If a listing does not say, ask us.
Will a roof rack fit a 4Runner with a sunroof?
The Rago 2010–2024 and 2025+ racks and the C4 Fabrication 5th and 6th gen racks state the sunroof keeps working, and the Eezi-Awn K9 for the 3rd gen leaves the sunroof uncovered. For other racks, check the listing or call us.
Is a 3/4 roof rack better than a full roof rack on a 4Runner?
A 3/4 rack is better if you want less weight and wind area and only carry gear up front. A full-length rack is better for rooftop tents, long items and decking, because it gives you more crossbar spread and more space.
How much weight can a 4Runner roof rack hold?
It depends on the rack and on the vehicle. Prinsu rates its 5th gen Full Non-Drill at 600 lb dynamic and 1,000 lb static, and Eezi-Awn says K9 systems can reach about 500 lb dynamic and 1,000 lb static. Toyota publishes its own roof load limit, so check your owner's manual and use the lower number while driving.
Do 5th gen 4Runner roof racks fit the 2025 4Runner?
No. The 6th gen (2025 and newer) uses its own racks, so buy one listed for 2025+; Prinsu, Rago, C4, DV8, KC HiLiTES and Cali Raised LED all have 6th gen versions.
Can I mount a light bar on a 4Runner roof rack?
Yes, if the rack has a light bar fairing or mount, such as Rago's light pocket racks, C4's 40-inch cutout fairing or DV8's 6th gen cutout fairing. Roof light rules vary by state, so check yours.
Do I need to remove the factory roof rails to install a roof rack?
Most full platforms mount to the factory roof points, which often means the factory rails come off; follow the rack maker's instructions. Crossbars such as the Cali Raised LED 2010–2024 cross bars are made to work with the factory roof rails instead.
