Morimoto headlights are complete replacement housings, not bulbs. You unplug and unbolt the factory headlights and put in an assembly built with its own LED projectors, daytime running lights and turn signals. For most trucks there are two or three versions: the XB Hybrid, the full XB LED, and on many Toyota and Ford trucks the flagship XB Evo. This guide explains what separates them, what Morimoto says about DOT compliance, and which Morimoto headlights we list for the Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra, F-150, Super Duty, Ram, Jeep, Bronco and more.

Short answer: The XB Hybrid is Morimoto's lower-cost LED projector headlight. The XB LED adds more projectors and sequential signals on most trucks. The XB Evo is the top line, with lens heating and swappable DRL and signal settings. Morimoto states its standard XB headlights meet DOT and FMVSS108 when aimed correctly, and nearly all are plug-and-play. Match the housing to your exact model years before you order.

Are Morimoto headlights worth it over LED bulbs?

A bulb swap puts an LED into a housing that was designed around a halogen filament, and the beam pattern is only as good as that match. A full housing like the Morimoto XB is designed around its LED projectors from the start, so the cutoff, the spread and the hot spot are engineered together. That is the main reason people go to a complete assembly: better, more controlled light on the road, plus a new lens, new DRLs and a modern look in one swap.

The tradeoff is cost and the fact that you are replacing the whole headlight. If you just want to brighten your stock housings, we also carry LED headlight bulbs. For the background on how LED and halogen compare, read our LED vs halogen headlights guide.

XB LED vs XB Hybrid vs XB Evo: what is the difference?

The names stay the same across trucks, but what each version includes changes from model to model. This is the general pattern across the listings we carry. Always check the spec table on the product page for your truck.

XB Hybrid XB LED XB Evo
Where it sits Lower-cost entry into a Morimoto housing The core XB line Morimoto's flagship
Projectors LED low and high projectors, usually fewer per side Bi-LED projectors, often three or four per side Dual or quad Bi-LED, plus high-beam assist on some trucks
DRL and signals White DRL; some keep a halogen turn bulb Sequential DRL or signals on many trucks Signal-swap keys: white or amber DRL, sequential or standard signals
Lens heating No No Yes, frost-free heated lens
Compliance (per Morimoto) DOT / FMVSS108 DOT / SAE / FMVSS108 DOT / FMVSS108 in standard form; optional Supercharged driver is off-road only

XB Hybrid

The Hybrid is how Morimoto gets a projector housing to a lower price. On the Ram HD (2019-2024) XB Hybrid, Morimoto uses a dedicated LED low beam projector and a dedicated LED high beam projector and keeps the original halogen bulbs for the turn signals. On the Super Duty (2020-2022) XB Hybrid, it is two projectors per side instead of the four in the higher-end units. Morimoto still rates these well above stock halogen output.

XB LED

The core XB adds projectors and features. The F-150 (2015-2017) XB LED uses a quad-projector layout that Morimoto rates at 200% more light than stock, with sequential DRLs and a start-up sequence. The Super Duty (2017-2019) XB LED uses a four-projector layout and a Y-shaped DRL, and Morimoto rates it at a 57% intensity increase over both the factory halogen and factory LED headlights.

XB Evo

The Evo is Morimoto's top line. On the Tacoma (2016-2023) XB Evo, Morimoto lists dual Ishida Bi-LED projectors on Nichia LEDs, a high-beam assist, a logic-controlled heated lens, and signal-swap keys to run white or amber DRLs and sequential or standard turn signals. Morimoto also offers an optional Supercharged driver on several Evo models that adds roughly 30% intensity. Morimoto is clear that the Supercharged drivers are for off-road use and are not compliant on public roads.

There is also an XB Evo Hybrid on some trucks, which uses the same dual Bi-LED projectors as the Evo at a lower price. On the Tacoma and 4Runner, the Evo Hybrid listings show a white DRL with amber fade-off signals rather than the full signal-swap and heated-lens package.

Are Morimoto headlights DOT approved?

Morimoto states that its XB LED, XB Hybrid and XB Evo headlights meet DOT and FMVSS108 requirements in their standard configuration, and most of our listings show that claim in the spec table. Two caveats matter:

  • Aim. Morimoto ties compliance to proper aim. A housing that is aimed too high glares oncoming drivers no matter how good the optics are. Aim them after install, and again after a lift or level.
  • Options. The optional Supercharged drivers on XB Evo models are off-road only. On the Bronco XRGB, Morimoto notes that some of the app-selectable DRL colors may be restricted for on-road use.

All of these are built for left-hand-drive traffic, which is what US trucks need.

Which Morimoto headlights fit my truck?

Fitment below comes from each product listing. Years matter: a 2023 Tacoma and a 2024 Tacoma are different trucks, and many Morimoto housings change with a facelift. If your year sits on the edge of a range, call us before you order.

How hard is it to install Morimoto headlights?

On most trucks it is a bolt-in, plug-in job with hand tools. The general order:

  1. Confirm fitment and options. Check your year, trim and whether your truck has factory halogen or factory LED headlights. A few housings need an adapter harness for LED-equipped trucks.
  2. Get access. Many trucks need the grille or part of the bumper cover removed to reach the headlight bolts. Take your time with plastic clips.
  3. Swap the housings. Unplug the factory connector, unbolt the old headlight, bolt in the Morimoto and plug it in.
  4. Set any options. On XB Evo models, plug in the signal-swap keys for the DRL and turn signal behavior you want.
  5. Test and aim. Check low, high, DRL, turn and parking functions, then aim the headlights on a level surface against a wall.

Most housings arrive as a pair with the harness or connectors Morimoto specifies. What is in the box varies, so check the "what's included" line on the listing. The Frontier XB Hybrid, for example, lists a pair of headlights and a plug-and-play harness with a fuse tap.

Matching headlights and tail lights

If you want the front and rear to match, Morimoto sells headlight and tail light combos for several trucks, such as the Tacoma 2016-2023 combo, which pairs XB Evo or Evo Hybrid headlights with XB LED tail lights. Morimoto XB tail lights are also sold on their own for many trucks. Browse LED tail lights for your truck. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Morimoto XB LED and XB Hybrid headlights?

Both are complete headlight assemblies, not bulbs. The XB Hybrid is Morimoto's lower-cost version: it typically uses fewer projectors or simpler signal and DRL optics, and some Hybrids keep a halogen bulb for the turn signal. The full XB LED and XB Evo use more projectors and add features like sequential signals, and on the Evo, lens heating. Each product page lists exactly what that version includes.

Are Morimoto headlights street legal?

Morimoto states that its XB LED, XB Hybrid and XB Evo headlights meet DOT and FMVSS108 requirements in standard form when properly aimed, and each listing shows the compliance claim for that model. The optional Supercharged drivers offered on some XB Evo models raise output for off-road use and are not compliant on public roads.

Are Morimoto headlights plug-and-play?

Most are. The truck-specific XB housings plug into the factory connector and bolt to the factory mounting points. A few need a small extra step, such as the Nissan Frontier XB Hybrid, which has a DRL cable that runs to the fuse box, or 2021-2024 4Runners with factory projector LED headlights, which need Morimoto's adapter harness.

What is the XB Evo frost-free lens?

On XB Evo models, Morimoto builds a heating element into the housing to warm the lens and keep frost and snow from building up. On the Tacoma, 4Runner and F-150 XB Evo listings, Morimoto says you activate it by flashing the high beams four times when it is below about 41 F (5 C).

Do I need to aim Morimoto headlights after installing them?

Yes. Any new headlight assembly should be aimed after install, and Morimoto ties road legality to proper aim. It matters even more on a lifted or leveled truck, because the lift changes where the beam lands. The assemblies have adjusters for this.

Do Morimoto headlights come with a warranty?

Many Morimoto headlight listings state a five-year warranty, including the XB Evo and several XB Hybrid models. Check the product page for your specific headlight and our Morimoto warranty summary for the details and how claims work.
