MOLLE Panels for Trucks and SUVs: Where They Mount and What to Hang
A MOLLE panel is a slotted steel or aluminum plate that bolts into your truck or SUV and turns a flat, unused surface into a place to hang gear. The common spots are the rear side windows of an SUV, the bed walls of a truck, the center console, the tailgate and the overhead area of a Jeep or Bronco. This guide covers each type, how they mount, what you can hang on them, and which panels we carry for the 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, Bronco, Jeep, Ranger and full-size trucks.
Short answer: Pick the location first: rear window panels for SUV cargo areas, bed cab and bed side panels for trucks, console panels for daily carry, and tailgate or overhead panels for Jeeps and Broncos. Buy the panel made for your exact vehicle and generation, check whether it bolts to factory points or needs drilling, and skip rear window panels if you seat people in a third row.
What are MOLLE panels used for?
MOLLE started as a military webbing standard for attaching pouches to packs. On a vehicle it means a grid of slots that accepts MOLLE pouches and straps, plus bolts, clamps and zip ties, so gear lives on the walls where it stays put and stays in reach.
A good setup frees the floor for a fridge, bins or drawers and keeps recovery gear and the first aid kit within quick reach. If you are working on a full storage plan, our truck bed storage and organization guide covers drawers, boxes and racks too.
Types of MOLLE panels: where they mount
| Panel type | Where it goes | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rear window | Over the rear side windows in an SUV cargo area | Med kits, recovery gear, bags | Not for vehicles using a third row |
| Exterior window | Outside the rear side windows, hung from a roof rack | Fuel or water packs, shovels, extinguishers | Requires a compatible roof rack |
| Bed cab | Front wall of a truck bed | Shovels, jacks, traction boards | Tonneau and bed rack clearance |
| Bed side | Inner walls of a truck bed | Straps, tools, recovery kit | Sold per side on many models |
| Center console | Sides of the front console, often with a device bridge | Knife, light, radio, phone mount | Some require drilling |
| Tailgate / overhead / door | Swing gates, roll bars, door pockets (Jeep, Bronco) | Lightweight gear, comms, chase lights | Check top-on and top-off fit |
4Runner MOLLE panels by generation
The 4Runner has the deepest MOLLE catalog of any vehicle we carry, and the rear window area is the most popular spot. One rule applies across generations: both Rago Fabrication and DV8 Offroad say their rear panels are not meant for 4Runners with the third-row seat in use.
5th Gen 4Runner (2010-2024)
Rear window panels: the Rago Fabrication 5th Gen Molle Storage Panel System is sold as a pair, and Rago says it installs without drilling and has a mounting point at the top of each panel for a Baja Designs dome light (not included). Add the Rago Molle Storage Panel Shelf, which spans between the panels and requires them. The DV8 Offroad Rear Window Molle Panels (MPT3-01) are 3mm steel and bolt into OEM locations with minor drilling; DV8 lists about 1.5 hours and notes they are not compatible with tonneau covers. The C4 Fabrication Rear Window MOLLE Panel Pair has dome light provisions and an add-on shelf option, and Cali Raised LED makes an interior rear MOLLE panel with a shelf option.
Rear hatch and overhead: Cali Raised LED makes a rear hatch MOLLE panel in 5052 aluminum (Cali Raised recommends heavy-duty struts for heavier loads) and a rear MOLLE overhead tray.
Exterior: the Rago E-MSP hangs outside the rear window from Rago, Sherpa or Prinsu style roof racks and uses two RAM suction cups against the glass. The Cali Raised LED exterior window panel requires a Cali Raised or Prinsu roof rack. If you are still choosing a rack, read our 4Runner roof rack guide.
Console: the DV8 Center Console Molle Panels and Device Mount put panels on both sides of the console with a removable device bridge that accepts RAM, Bulletpoint and Quad Lock base plates. DV8 lists drilling and about 2 hours. Cali Raised LED also makes 5th Gen console MOLLE panels.
6th Gen 4Runner (2025+)
The new 4Runner already has solid options. Rago makes a Rear Molle Storage Panel System that mounts to four install points, a matching storage shelf, external panels that bolt to Rago roof racks, and center console panels that keep access to the factory controls and cup holders. DV8's Rear Window Pocket Molle Panels (MPTF3-02) fill the rear window recess and require drilling. Cali Raised LED offers an interior rear side window panel with a shelf option.
3rd and 4th Gen 4Runner
Older trucks are covered too: the Rago 1996-2002 Rear Window Molle Panels mount at four points per side, and the Rago 2003-2009 Molle Storage Panel System installs without drilling. For the rest of the build, see our 4Runner overland build guide.
Tacoma and Tundra bed and cab MOLLE panels
Toyota Tacoma
| Generation | Location | Options we carry |
|---|---|---|
| 2024+ (4th Gen) | Bed cab | Rago Bed Cab Molle Panels, SXTH Element Front Bed MOLLE Panel Kit |
| 2024+ (4th Gen) | Bed side | C4 Fabrication Bed Side MOLLE Panels (sold per side) |
| 2016-2023 (3rd Gen) | Bed wall | Fishbone Offroad Bed Molle Panel (short bed) |
| 2016-2023 (3rd Gen) | Rear window (in cab) | Rago Endeavor Rear Window Molle Panels |
| 2016-2023 (3rd Gen) | Center console | DV8 Console Molle Panels and Device Mount |
| 2005-2023 | Bed | Cali Raised LED Bed MOLLE System (BAKFlip version also listed) |
SXTH Element says its 2024+ front bed kit is 1/8 in. aluminum with stainless hardware and bolts on without drilling. Rago's 4th Gen bed cab panels install to existing mounting points behind the factory bed rail. The Rago 3rd Gen rear window panels use OEM holes at the top and need drilling for the bottom mounts, and the center panel can come out for rear window access. More Tacoma ideas are in our Tacoma accessories guide and Tacoma bed rack guide.
Toyota Tundra
For the 2022+ Tundra, Rago makes Bed Cab Molle Panels (some drilling required) and driver and passenger bed side panels, and Cali Raised LED makes a Front Bed MOLLE System for CrewMax trucks only that it lists as BAKFlip compatible. For the 2014-2021 Tundra, Cali Raised LED has a front bed MOLLE system. See our Tundra accessories guide for more.
Bronco and Jeep MOLLE panels
Broncos and Wranglers have more mounting spots than most vehicles: rear windows, tailgate, overhead roll bars, doors and console. On the Bronco 4-door hardtop, the DV8 Rear Window Molle Panels wrap around the rear roll bars, and the Addictive Desert Designs Rear Window Molle Storage Panels bolt to factory accessory points and stay in place with the top on or off (ADD notes they do not fit soft top or 2-door models). The DV8 Tailgate Reinforcement Molle Panel spreads spare tire load across the swing gate, including 35 in. setups per DV8, and bolts on with no drilling.
On the Wrangler JL, the DV8 Rear Window Molle Storage Panels (MPJL-01) follow the rear roll bars and work with the hardtop on or off, and the DV8 pocketed version holds gear on both faces. The DV8 JL Tailgate Reinforcement Molle Panel keeps stock tire fitment and works with DV8 tire delete kits. DV8 also makes JL/JT door pocket, console and overhead panels. See our Bronco accessories guide and Gladiator accessories guide.
Ranger, F-150 and full-size truck bed panels
Addictive Desert Designs covers the full-size trucks. For the Ranger Raptor (2024-2026), ADD makes Bed Cab Molle Panels that keep the factory tie-downs, plus matching bed side panels. For the 2021+ F-150 and Raptor there are Bed Side Molle Panels that keep access to factory bed accessories and Bed Cab Molle Panels. ADD also lists bed panels for the 2023+ Super Duty, 2019+ Ram 1500 and Ram HD, and 2019-2024 Chevy/GMC 1500. Browse Addictive Desert Designs for your truck.
How do MOLLE panels mount?
There are two basic approaches, and the product page always says which one you are getting.
- Factory mounting points. Many panels bolt to existing holes, studs or accessory points with factory or included hardware. Examples include Rago's 5th Gen 4Runner system and ADD's Bronco rear window panels. These are reversible and the easiest installs.
- Drilling required. Some panels need a few new holes for a rigid, rattle-free fit, such as DV8's 6th Gen 4Runner rear window panels and console kits, or Rago's 3rd Gen Tundra bed cab panels. Use rivet nuts or the hardware provided, and seal any holes in a truck bed.
Exterior window panels are a third style: they hang from a roof rack and rest against the glass on suction cups, so you need a compatible rack first.
What attaches to a MOLLE panel?
MOLLE pouches and straps work on any panel. For heavier or awkward items, use dedicated mounts:
- Rago Quick Fist Mounts for shovels, axes and flashlights. Rago says they also fit ADD and DV8 panels.
- DV8 Quick Release Molle Tool Mounts, with a clamp that adjusts from 1 1/4 to 1 5/8 in.
- Rago Universal Molle Panel RotopaX Mounts for fuel or water packs (the RotopaX mount itself is sold separately).
- Cali Raised LED Hi-Lift Jack Mounts for bed MOLLE systems.
- Cali Raised LED Molle Accessory Nut, pre-threaded 1/4-20, to add accessories without removing the panel.
Keep heavy items low and near mounting points, and go light on panels that hang on suction cups or a rear hatch. If you carry traction boards, see our traction boards guide for mounting ideas.

Frequently asked questions
What is a MOLLE panel?
A MOLLE panel is a steel or aluminum plate cut with a grid of slots. MOLLE pouches, straps, clamps, bolts and zip ties attach to the grid, so you can hang bags, tools and recovery gear on a wall of your vehicle instead of piling them on the floor. Vehicle-specific panels are shaped to fit a particular spot, like the rear windows, bed walls or center console.
Do MOLLE panels require drilling?
It depends on the panel. Rago Fabrication says its 5th Gen 4Runner rear panel system needs no drilling, and Addictive Desert Designs' Bronco rear window panels bolt to factory accessory points. Others need some drilling, such as DV8's 5th Gen 4Runner rear window panels (minor drilling), DV8's 6th Gen 4Runner panels and Rago's 3rd Gen Tundra bed cab panels. Each product page lists the install requirements.
Can I use rear window MOLLE panels with a third-row seat?
Generally no. Rago says its 4Runner panel systems were not designed for 4Runners with the third-row seat, and DV8 does not recommend its 4Runner rear window panels with third-row seating because of the side curtain airbags. If you use your third row for passengers, skip rear window panels.
What are the best MOLLE panels for a 5th Gen 4Runner?
For the rear cargo area, we carry rear window panels from Rago Fabrication, DV8 Offroad, C4 Fabrication and Cali Raised LED, plus a shelf that spans between Rago's panels. For outside storage, Rago's E-MSP and Cali Raised LED's exterior window panel mount to a compatible roof rack. DV8 and Cali Raised LED also make center console MOLLE panels for the 5th Gen.
What can I hang on a MOLLE panel?
Common choices are first aid kits, recovery straps, fire extinguishers, tool rolls, flashlights, radios, knife sheaths and MOLLE pouches. With add-on mounts you can carry bigger items: Quick Fist clamps or quick-release tool mounts hold shovels and axes, RotopaX mounts hold fuel or water packs, and Hi-Lift jack mounts work on bed panels.
Do bed MOLLE panels work with a tonneau cover?
Some do. Cali Raised LED makes Tacoma bed MOLLE systems specifically for use with a BAKFlip cover, and says its 2022+ Tundra front bed system is compatible with a BAKFlip. Fitment with other covers varies, so check the product page or ask us before ordering.
