The Ranger is a good size for overlanding: small enough for tight trails and parking lots, big enough to carry a camp. It's also a truck where weight adds up fast, so the order you build it in matters. This guide lays out a Ranger overland build step by step and flags where the 2019–2023 truck, the 2024+ truck and the Ranger Raptor take different parts.

Short answer: Build a Ford Ranger for overlanding in this order: tires and recovery gear, then armor (bumpers and skids), then suspension, then a bed rack or camper, then interior storage, power and lighting. Confirm your generation first, because 2019–2023 trucks, 2024+ trucks and the 2024+ Ranger Raptor use different bumpers, suspension and interior parts, and check the payload on your door-pillar placard before every heavy purchase.

First, confirm which Ranger you have

Truck Years (US) What it means for parts
4th gen Ranger 2019–2023 The largest selection of suspension and armor. Some parts split again inside this range, for example ICON lists kits for 2019–2021 trucks with aluminum knuckles separately from steel-knuckle trucks.
Current Ranger 2024+ New body and interior on the updated T6.2 platform. Most bumpers, dash mounts and interior trim are generation-specific.
Ranger Raptor 2024+ Wider body and its own suspension. Shop Raptor-listed bumpers, lift parts and seat deletes only.

Write down the year, trim, cab and bed length before you order. SuperCrew and SuperCab trucks take different interior storage, and bed racks and campers are listed by bed length.

Payload comes first

The Ranger's limit isn't usually power, it's payload. Every truck has a Tire and Loading Information placard on the driver's door pillar that states the most weight of people and cargo it should carry. Subtract passengers, every part you bolt on, your gear, water and fuel, and any trailer tongue weight. A steel bumper, a winch, a bed rack and a rooftop tent can use a big share of a midsize truck's payload before you pack anything. Choose the lighter part when two do the same job, and keep weight low and between the axles.

The Ranger overland build, in order

Phase What it includes Why it comes here
1. Tires and recovery All-terrain tires, recovery points, strap, shackles, traction boards Tires decide where you can go; recovery gear gets you home
2. Armor Front and rear bumpers, skid plates, winch Protects the parts that end a trip, and sets front weight before suspension
3. Suspension Leveling, coilovers, rear shocks and springs, full systems Tune it once you know the loaded weight
4. Bed rack or camper Bed bars, cab-height racks, canopy campers, bed storage Where most payload goes
5. Interior, power and lighting Seat deletes, drawers, device mounts, power, aux lights Comfort and organization once the truck works

Phase 1: Tires and recovery gear

Good all-terrain tires in a stout load range do more for an overland Ranger than any lift. Bigger tires need room, so decide on tire size alongside suspension, not after. Buy recovery gear at the same time: rated frame-mounted recovery points, a recovery strap, rated soft shackles, traction boards, a shovel and a tire deflator. Use only rated gear and never attach a strap to a tow ball. Our traction boards guide and airing down guide cover the basics.

Phase 2: Armor, bumpers and a winch

A steel front bumper gives you a winch mount, real recovery points and light mounts, but it puts weight at the very front of a midsize truck. For 2019–2022 trucks, Addictive Desert Designs makes the Stealth Fighter front bumper and matching rear bumper. For the 2024+ Ranger Raptor, ADD offers the Phantom and Edge front bumpers, a Phantom rear bumper and an adaptive cruise control relocation kit, which equipped trucks need with an aftermarket bumper.

Size a winch at about 1.5 times the loaded weight of the truck. For most Rangers that lands in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range. See our off-road winches by capacity.

Phase 3: Suspension

Do suspension after armor so ride height is set with the bumper and winch on. On 2019–2023 trucks, ICON's systems run from a Stage 1, 0–3.5" lift up through Stage 8, and ICON sells 2.5 VS coilover kits, extended-travel remote-reservoir coilovers, rear 2.5 VS piggyback shocks and a multi-rate leaf pack for trucks that carry weight in the bed. Upper control arms and kits are listed separately for aluminum-knuckle and steel-knuckle trucks, so check which knuckle your truck has.

On the 2024+ Ranger Raptor, the factory suspension is already built for off-road use. ICON Alloys' 2.25" front coilover spacer kit levels it. For any lift, budget for an alignment and expect headlight re-aim; newer trucks may need driver-assist recalibration. Compare options in Leveling Kit vs Lift Kit.

Phase 4: Bed rack, camper and bed storage

This phase spends the most payload, so it comes after you know what everything else weighs. A bed rack keeps the bed open and carries a rooftop tent, fuel or water cans and recovery boards. For 2019–2021 trucks, CBI Offroad Fab makes overland bed bars and a cab-height bed rack. Prinsu builds 5' and 6' Ranger top racks plus a SuperCrew roof rack, and Eezi-Awn makes the K9 roof rack kit for double-cab Rangers.

If you run an Alu-Cab canopy camper on a 2019–2023 truck, Goose Gear's camper system turns the bed into storage: 5' and 6' bed plate systems with drawer, utility and power management modules. For an open bed, Charvonia Design bed tie-down anchors give you stronger anchor points, and ADD makes bedside and cab MOLLE panels for the 2024+ Raptor.

Phase 5: Interior storage, power and lighting

Interior parts come last because they don't decide whether the truck gets there. If you travel without rear passengers, a seat delete turns the back seat into lockable storage: Goose Gear makes a 2019–2023 SuperCrew seat delete with an optional single drawer module, plus separate seat deletes for the 2024+ Ranger and Ranger Raptor. Tackform's TRAXX dash brackets add phone and tablet mounts for 2019–2023 and 2024+ trucks.

Size power to what you'll actually run, usually a fridge, lights and charging. Read Power Station vs Dual Battery before you wire anything. For lighting, start with light close to the truck, such as fog and ditch lights, before a big bar; our ditch lights guide explains beam patterns. Off-road-only lights stay off on public roads.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by "Ranger" alone. 2019–2023, 2024+ and Raptor parts rarely interchange, and knuckle type, cab and bed length matter too.
  • Ignoring payload. Add up bumpers, winch, rack, camper and gear before you buy them.
  • Lifting before armor. A heavy bumper and winch change the front ride height you just set.
  • Forgetting driver aids. Adaptive cruise relocation and recalibration are part of the job on newer trucks.
  • Treating a rack's static rating as a driving rating. Ask for the dynamic rating before loading a tent and gear on the road.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ford Ranger a good overland truck?

Yes, especially for one or two people. It's narrow enough for tight trails and has a wide aftermarket for 2019–2023 trucks, with more parts arriving for the 2024+ truck and Raptor. Payload is the main limit, so plan the build around it.

What should I upgrade first on a Ranger for overlanding?

Tires and recovery gear. All-terrain tires and a rated recovery kit do more than a lift or lights, and they're what gets you home when something goes wrong.

Do 2019–2023 Ranger parts fit a 2024+ Ranger?

Usually not. The 2024+ truck has a new body and interior, so bumpers, dash mounts and interior storage are generation-specific. The Ranger Raptor has its own bumpers and suspension. Check the year on every listing.

What size winch does a Ford Ranger need?

Use about 1.5 times the truck's loaded weight. For most Rangers that means a 9,000 to 12,000 lb winch on a winch-ready bumper.

Should I use a bed rack or a camper on a Ranger?

A bed rack keeps the bed open and carries a rooftop tent and cans, but gear is exposed. A canopy camper keeps gear dry and locked and pairs with bed storage systems like Goose Gear's. Both count against payload.
