Knuckle Pod Lights: How They Work, What Fits and How to Install
Knuckle lights are pod lights that bolt to your front steering knuckles, so they turn when your wheels turn. Instead of lighting straight ahead, they light the corner you're steering into, and because they sit low, they put light under fog, dust and snow instead of into it. This guide covers how knuckle pod lights work, which GateKeeper Off-Road mount fits your vehicle or axle, which pods to run, and how to install and wire them.
Short answer: Pick the GateKeeper Knuckle Pod mount made for your vehicle or front axle, then pair it with compact pods no bigger than 2.25 x 2.25 x 2.25 inches and 10 oz each. Most mounts bolt on with factory hardware in an afternoon; the Super Duty mounts require drilling. Mounts are sold as a pair, and lights and wiring are separate.
How knuckle pod lights work
A knuckle pod mount is a laser-cut, CNC-bent steel bracket that bolts to the steering knuckle behind each front wheel. A small pod light sits on each bracket. When you turn the wheel, the knuckle rotates, and the light rotates with it. GateKeeper Off-Road holds the patents on this design (US Patents 11,254,259 and 11,524,622), and its mounts are the ones we carry.
That gives you two things fixed lights can't. First, the beam follows the steering, so on a tight switchback the light is already pointed where you're going. Second, the low position lights the ground right in front of the tires, which is where rocks, ruts and roots are, and it stays under the glare that fog, dust and snow throw back at roof and bumper lights.
Knuckle lights vs ditch lights
Ditch lights and knuckle lights get compared a lot, but they solve different problems, and plenty of builds run both.
| Knuckle lights | Ditch lights | |
|---|---|---|
| Mount location | Steering knuckles, behind the front wheels | A-pillars or hood, near the base of the windshield |
| Direction | Turns with the steering | Fixed, usually aimed outward |
| What it lights | The corner you're turning into and the ground at the tires | The edges and shoulders of the trail |
| In fog, dust or snow | Low mount stays under most of the glare | High mount can light up the haze |
| Pod size | Compact only (2.25 in. cube, 10 oz or less) | Usually 3-inch pods or larger |

Which knuckle pod mount fits my vehicle?
GateKeeper makes mounts two ways: vehicle-specific mounts for stock front ends, and axle-specific mounts for built rigs running an aftermarket axle. Fitment below is taken from each listing. All of these are sold as a pair, laser cut and CNC bent, and powder coated.
Vehicle-specific mounts
| Vehicle | Fitment notes | Install |
|---|---|---|
| Jeep Wrangler JL / Gladiator JT (2018+) | Stock Dana 30 / Dana 44 front axle. Also fits Reid knuckles, not RockJock knuckles. Better results on offset wheels. | Bolt-on, factory hardware |
| Jeep Wrangler JK / JKU (2007-2018) | Stock Dana 30 / Dana 44. Also listed for Reid and TeraFlex knuckles and Ultimate 44 / Pro Rock 44 axles. | Bolt-on |
| Jeep Wrangler TJ / YJ (1987-2006) | OEM Dana 30 / Dana 44 knuckles, also Reid knuckles. Axles with RCV boots need some grinding for clearance. | Bolt-on, factory hardware |
| Ford Bronco (2021+) | Not for the Bronco Raptor. GateKeeper says they work best with an aftermarket bumper and a lift; the stock bumper and skid can block some light. | Bolt-on, factory hardware |
| Ford Super Duty F-250 / F-350 (2023+) | Dana 60 / Dana 50 front axle. Hardware included. | Requires drilling |
| Ford Super Duty F-250 / F-350 (2017-2022) | Dana 60 / Dana 50 front axle. Built for compact cube pods. Hardware included. | Requires drilling |
| Ford Super Duty with Reid knuckles (2005-2012) | For Reid high-steer knuckles on Dana 60 front axles. | Bolt-on, factory hardware |
| Ford F-150 Raptor, 1st gen (2010-2014) | Listed for the 1st gen Raptor. | Bolt-on, factory hardware |
| Ram 2500 / 3500 (2014-2018) | 4th gen Ram heavy-duty front axles. | Bolts to the knuckles |
| Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra 1500 (1999-2019) | Stock spindles. May not fit every aftermarket spindle. | Bolt-on, factory hardware |
| Toyota 4Runner, 3rd gen (1996-2002) | Tolerances are tight on stock wheels; GateKeeper notes a 0.5 in. wheel spacer helps. | Bolt-on |
| Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80 (1990-1997) | Stock axles, also Reid knuckles. | Bolt-on, factory hardware |
Axle-specific and universal mounts
If you've swapped in an aftermarket front axle, buy by axle instead of by vehicle. These fit whatever rig is running that axle.
| Axle | Fitment notes | Install |
|---|---|---|
| Dana 60 kingpin / Fusion 4x4 | High steer arms with a 4 or 5 bolt pattern. Includes tapered washers for studded arms. | Bolt-on, factory hardware |
| Dana/Spicer Ultimate Dana 60 | Single (passenger) or dual high steer versions. | Requires welding or drilling and tapping |
| Dynatrac ProRock 60 | Also Reid knuckles. Does not fit the XD60 axles in the Hardcore PLUS and ELITE ProRock packages. | Bolt-on, factory hardware |
| Currie Rock Jock Dana 60 / 70 high steer | Dual high steer or passenger high steer only. | Bolt-on |
| Universal DIY (custom axles, heim-joint steering) | 1/2 in. mounting hole, 3/8 in. light hole. | Bolt-on; you set the position |
On Dana 60 kingpin high steer arms with tapered, stud-mounted holes, GateKeeper uses a tapered washer kit (3 washers per side, so most dual high steer setups need two sets). Not sure what axle you're running? Call us before you order.

Best pod lights for knuckle mounts
Size and weight matter more here than anywhere else on the truck, because the light hangs off a part that moves and takes hits. GateKeeper recommends lights up to 2.25 x 2.25 x 2.25 inches and 10 oz each, and says lights over that size or over 12 oz void the mount warranty. Every light in our recommended pod lights for GateKeeper Knuckle Pods collection stays inside those limits.
- GK Easy Switch 3 Function LED Amber/White Pod Lights: built by GateKeeper for these mounts. Toggling power cycles white high beam, amber low beam and an amber/white combo, so one standard on/off switch runs all three. 15W and 3,000 lumens per light, 1.25 x 1.25 x 1.75 in. and 0.4 lb. Sold as a pair with 3 ft pigtails; switch and harness not included.
- Baja Designs S1 Black LED Auxiliary Light Pod Pair and the single S1 pod: Baja's smallest pod. Add the S1 rock guard if you're in rocks.
- Baja Designs S2 Sport and S2 Pro pod pairs, with the S2/Squadron security hardware kit if you park where lights walk off.
- KC HiLiTES FLEX ERA 1 2-Light Master Kit: a compact KC pod sold as a two-light kit.
Amber is worth considering for at least one mode. Many drivers find it cuts glare off dust and snow, which is the conditions knuckle lights are best at. For more on pods in general, see our LED pod lights buying guide.
How to install knuckle pod mounts
Most GateKeeper mounts bolt to the knuckle using existing hardware, and the install is basic hand tools. The general order:
- Confirm fitment. Match the mount to your year and axle, and note any knuckle exceptions (for example, the JL/JT mount fits Reid knuckles but not RockJock).
- Safely support the truck and turn the wheel to get room at the knuckle. On some vehicles pulling the wheel makes it easier.
- Bolt the bracket on with the hardware GateKeeper specifies. The 2017-2022 and 2023+ Super Duty mounts require drilling, and the Ultimate Dana 60 mount requires welding or drilling and tapping. Torque to spec.
- Mount the pods and aim them slightly down and out.
- Check clearance at full lock and full droop. Turn lock to lock and cycle the suspension if you can. Watch for contact with the wheel, tire, brake line and ABS wire. On the 3rd gen 4Runner, GateKeeper notes a 0.5 in. wheel spacer helps on stock wheels, and on the JL/JT, offset wheels give better results.
Wiring knuckle lights
The wiring is the part to plan carefully, because the wire has to move with the knuckle. Run it along the brake line or ABS wire path, secure it with loops, and leave enough slack for full steering lock and full suspension droop. Then check it lock to lock before you call it done.
Pods should run through a fused circuit with a relay and switch. If you already have a switch panel such as an sPOD, GateKeeper's 16 AWG 2-Lead Wire Extension Kit (5 ft or 10 ft, red/black, heat shrink connectors) gets the lights from the knuckles to it. Measure the route before you pick a length. Browse light wiring for harnesses and switches.
A note on the law: many states restrict when auxiliary off-road lights can be used on public roads. Rules vary, so check yours before you wire knuckle lights to run on pavement.

Frequently asked questions
What are knuckle lights?
Knuckle lights are small pod lights mounted on brackets that bolt to the front steering knuckles. Because the knuckle turns when you steer, the lights turn with the wheels and point into the corner you're driving into. They sit low, which puts light under fog, dust, rain and snow instead of into it.
Are knuckle lights better than ditch lights?
They do a different job. Ditch lights sit high near the A-pillars and light the sides of the trail in a fixed direction. Knuckle lights sit low and steer with the wheels, so they light the turn you're making and the ground right in front of the tires. Many rigs run both.
What size pod light fits a knuckle mount?
GateKeeper recommends lights up to 2.25 x 2.25 x 2.25 inches and 10 oz each. Lights over that size or over 12 oz void the mount warranty, so stick to compact cube pods like those in our recommended pod lights collection.
Do I have to drill to install knuckle mounts?
Most GateKeeper mounts bolt on with factory hardware. The 2017-2022 and 2023+ Ford Super Duty mounts require drilling, and the Ultimate Dana 60 mount requires welding or drilling and tapping. Check the install note on each product page.
Are lights and wiring included?
No. GateKeeper mounts are sold as a pair of brackets. Pod lights, switch, relay and harness are separate. GateKeeper's 16 AWG two-lead extension runs the lights back to a switch panel you already have.
Which knuckle pod mount fits my Jeep?
GateKeeper makes separate mounts for the JL and JT (2018+), the JK (2007-2018) and the TJ and YJ (1987-2006). The JL/JT mount fits Reid knuckles but not RockJock knuckles, and the TJ/YJ mount needs some grinding if your axle runs RCV boots.
What warranty do knuckle pod mounts have?
GateKeeper lists a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser on its Knuckle Pod mounts. Its Easy Switch pod lights carry a 1-year defect warranty. Running lights larger than 2.25 inches or heavier than 12 oz voids the mount warranty.
