The right Chevy Silverado headlight upgrade might be a complete LED assembly, plug-in bulbs, a halo kit or a color-changing DRL kit. What fits depends on your truck's generation and its factory headlight type. This guide sorts the parts NVMOS carries by truck.

Short answer: Find your body style first: 2003–2006, 2007–2013 (2007–2014 for HD), 2014–2018 1500, 2015–2019 HD, 2019-and-newer 1500 or 2020-and-newer HD. Then check whether your truck has halogen, HID or factory LED headlights, because that decides which assemblies plug in directly and which need a converter. A full assembly changes the beam and the look; LED bulbs are the quicker job on a halogen truck. Aim the lights after any install.

Assemblies, bulbs or add-ons: three ways to upgrade

Our LED vs halogen headlights guide covers the light-source basics if you are starting from scratch.

  • Complete headlight assemblies. The whole headlight is replaced: housing, lens, projectors or reflectors, DRL and turn signal. AlphaRex, Morimoto, Form Lighting and ORACLE all make Silverado assemblies. Some are LED, and the AlphaRex PRO-Series uses H7 halogen bulbs in projectors.
  • Replacement bulbs. You keep your factory housing and swap the bulb. Diode Dynamics makes LED bulbs in the sizes it lists for several Silverado years, plus D5A HID replacement bulbs for trucks that came with factory HID.
  • Add-ons and accents. ORACLE halo kits, ColorSHIFT DRL upgrade kits and demon eye kits change the look of your existing headlights without replacing them. Halo and demon eye kits install inside the headlight, so plan on opening the housing.

Chevy Silverado headlights by generation

Headlights are body-specific, and the HD split from the 1500 in 2015.

2003–2006 Silverado (and 2007 Classic)

The AlphaRex NOVA-Series LED Projector Headlights with Bumper Lights are listed for 2003–2006 Silverado 1500 and 2500HD/3500HD trucks, 2007 Classic body trucks and 2002–2006 Avalanche models without lower body cladding. Despite the 2003–2007 title, a 2007 must be the Classic body, so confirm on the product page. The matching bumper lights share the DRL and sequential signal. For a halo look with less work, ORACLE sells pre-assembled halo headlights for the 2003–2006 Silverado 1500/2500/3500 with white halo rings already sealed in. ORACLE also offers halo kits for this truck.

2007–2013 Silverado 1500 and 2007–2014 HD

These trucks came with halogen headlights, and this body has the widest choice of replacement assemblies. Make sure you have the new body style. Several listings say plainly that they do not fit the Silverado Classic.

  • AlphaRex. The PRO-Series Halogen Projector Headlights use H7 bulbs in vertical dual projectors, while the LUXX-Series (dual LED projectors) and NOVA-Series (quad LED projectors) are full LED. All three use a Y-shape LED tube for DRL and sequential signal and are listed for 2007–2013 1500 and 2007–2014 HD trucks.
  • Form Lighting. The Form Lighting LED Projector Headlights use three bi-LED projectors per side, and a reflector version uses LED reflector optics. Both add a C-shaped white DRL powered by an included fuse-box harness. Form lists them for US-market 2007–2013 trucks and does not break out HD trims, so ask us before ordering for an HD.
  • Morimoto. The Morimoto XB LED Headlights for the 2007–2013 Silverado use quad Bi-LED projectors and plug into the factory connectors, with connectors and rubber seals in the box. Morimoto does not break out HD trims, so confirm before ordering for an HD. Our Morimoto headlights guide covers the XB line in more depth.
  • ORACLE. Pre-assembled halo headlights come in chrome or black housings, plus DIY halo kits. These listings say 2007–2013 Silverado and do not mention HD trims.

2014–2018 Silverado 1500

On a 2014–2015 1500, the AlphaRex PRO-Series (H7 halogen projectors), LUXX-Series LED Projector Headlights and NOVA-Series are listed with no converter required. The Morimoto XB for 2014–2015 is listed as plug-and-play on trucks with or without factory LED DRLs. ORACLE splits its 2014–2015 halo kits into projector and non-projector versions, so check which headlight your truck has before you order.

On a 2016–2018 1500, the factory turn signal matters. AlphaRex says trucks with the stock LED turn signal headlights need the converter option on the LUXX-Series and NOVA-Series LED Projector Headlights, while trucks with the halogen signal are direct fit. The AlphaRex Headlight Converter Harness is also sold separately. Morimoto makes an XB headlight and a headlight and tail light combo for these years.

2015–2019 Silverado HD 2500/3500

AlphaRex offers the LUXX-Series LED Projector Headlights for the Silverado HD, a PRO-Series halogen version on H7 bulbs, and MK II NOVA-Series quad-projector headlights with either a paintable black or chrome center. AlphaRex notes the side amber reflector signal still uses a halogen bulb. Morimoto's XB for the 2015–2019 HD is listed for trucks with integrated or non-integrated LED DRLs. ORACLE lists a white halo kit for 2015–2018 2500/3500 trucks.

2019 and newer Silverado 1500 and 2020 and newer HD

For the 2019–2022 Silverado 1500, our current lineup is add-ons rather than full assemblies. The ORACLE ColorSHIFT RGB+W Headlight DRL Upgrade Kit replaces or overlays the factory DRL with app-controlled color LEDs, and the ORACLE demon eye kit puts a color LED in the center of each projector. ORACLE says the demon eye kit is for projector-style headlights only and that most headlights must be opened to fit it. ORACLE lists both kits as 2019–2022, but a 2019 Silverado LD kept the older body and 2022 trucks came in two front-end designs, so confirm your headlights with us first.

For the 2020–2024 Silverado HD, the Morimoto XB LED Headlights for the Silverado HD use Kuria Optic Bi-LED projectors and plug into the factory connectors. ORACLE also sells ColorSHIFT DRL and demon eye kits listed for the 2020–2023 HD.

Halogen, HID or factory LED: why your trim matters

Two Silverados from the same year can need different parts because Chevy fitted different headlights by trim.

  • Factory halogen. Most of the replacement assemblies above are built to replace halogen headlights and plug into the factory halogen connector.
  • Factory LED turn signal or LED DRL. On a 2016–2018 1500, AlphaRex requires the converter option for trucks with the stock LED turn signal. Morimoto lists its 2014–2015 1500 and 2015–2019 HD XB headlights for trucks with or without factory LED DRLs.
  • Factory HID. The Diode Dynamics Replacement D5A HID Bulbs are listed for 2016–2025 Silverado 1500 trucks that came with D5A HID headlights. They are a bulb swap, not an LED conversion. None of the assembly listings above address HID trucks, and Morimoto calls its 2016–2018 XB a halogen replacement, so call us before ordering an assembly.
  • Factory LED headlights. A halogen-replacement assembly may not plug in. Call us with your trim and a photo before ordering.

Bulb sizes also change by trim and by beam. Diode Dynamics lists its H9 SL2 LED Bulbs and H8 SL2 Pro bulbs for the 2007–2015 Silverado (without separating 1500 and HD) and the 2020–2026 Silverado 2500/3500. Its low beam pair lists Silverado 2500/3500 from 2016, which conflicts with those listings, so check the bulb on a 2016–2019 HD before ordering. Diode Dynamics notes that bulb sizes for low, high and fog vary by trim, so check the bulb you are pulling. The SL2 bulbs are polarity specific. If one does not light on the first try, call us before assuming it is bad.

Plug-and-play, DRL harnesses and street legality

"Plug-and-play" means no wire cutting, not always zero extra steps.

  • Extra harnesses. Form's 2007–2013 headlights add a running light the factory lamps never had, powered by an included harness that plugs into the fuse box. On 2016–2018 1500 trucks with LED signals, AlphaRex needs its converter.
  • Error codes. Morimoto says its 2007–2013, 2016–2018 1500 and 2020–2024 HD XB headlights do not throw error codes, and the last two do not flicker. Diode Dynamics ships anti-flicker modules with its low beam LED bulb pair.
  • Compliance. Morimoto lists DOT and SAE compliance for its Silverado XB headlights, and FMVSS108 on the 2007–2013 and 2020–2024 HD versions. Form states SAE, DOT, FMVSS and CMVSS compliance when the lights are installed and aimed correctly. The LED bulb listings mention the SAE J575 durability test, which is a durability test, not approval for use in a halogen housing. Colored DRLs and demon eyes fall under state rules, and ORACLE suggests checking yours, since many owners keep the DRL white while driving.

Aim your headlights after install

Every new assembly needs to be aimed. Form Lighting ties its compliance claim to correct aiming.

  1. Park on level ground about 25 feet from a wall or garage door, with normal tire pressure and a typical load in the bed.
  2. Mark the center of each headlight on the wall with tape, both height and side-to-side.
  3. Turn on the low beams. The top of the cutoff should sit at or slightly below the height of your marks, with the brightest part of the beam stepping up toward the passenger side.
  4. Use the adjusters to bring both beams to the same height, then check on a dark road.

If your manual or the headlight instructions list a specific drop, use it. Re-check aim after a level or lift. Our Silverado lift kit guide covers what else changes. For fog lights and the rest of the front end, see the Chevy Silverado accessories guide.

Frequently asked questions

Will 2014–2018 Silverado 1500 headlights fit a 2019 or newer truck?

No. The 2019 Silverado 1500 is a new body with different headlights, and every assembly here is listed for one body style. Carryover 2019 Silverado LD trucks kept the 2014–2018 body, and 2022 trucks came in two front-end designs, so match your front end, not just the model year.

Do I need a converter harness for AlphaRex headlights on a 2016–2018 Silverado 1500?

Only if your truck has the stock LED turn signal headlights. AlphaRex lists the LUXX-Series and NOVA-Series with a converter option for those trucks, and trucks with the halogen signal are direct fit. The converter is also sold on its own.

Can I put LED bulbs in my factory halogen Silverado headlights?

The bulbs will physically fit if you match the size, and Diode Dynamics lists H9 and H8 bulb sizes for the 2007–2015 Silverado and 2020–2026 Silverado 2500/3500. A halogen housing was designed around a halogen filament, though, and the bulb listings do not claim road-legal headlight compliance, so check your state rules and aim carefully. For a sharper cutoff, a full LED assembly is the more complete fix.

Are aftermarket Silverado headlights street legal?

It depends on the product. Morimoto lists DOT and SAE compliance for its Silverado XB headlights (plus FMVSS108 on the 2007–2013 and 2020–2024 HD versions), and Form Lighting states SAE, DOT, FMVSS and CMVSS compliance when installed and aimed. Colored DRL and demon eye lighting falls under state rules, which vary, so check yours before you drive with colors on.

Do Silverado 1500 headlights fit a 2500HD or 3500HD?

Sometimes. AlphaRex lists its 2007–2013 1500 headlights for 2007–2014 Silverado HD trucks too, but from 2015 on the HD has its own headlights. Form, Morimoto and ORACLE list their 2007–2013 headlights without breaking out HD trims, so ask us before ordering for an HD.

What is the difference between a halo kit and pre-assembled halo headlights?

A halo kit is a set of rings you install inside your existing headlights, and ORACLE says most headlights must be opened, usually by baking, to do it. Pre-assembled halo headlights are complete headlights with the rings already sealed in, so you install them like any replacement headlight.

Do I need to aim my headlights after installing new ones?

Yes. Any new assembly needs to be aimed before you drive at night, and Form Lighting ties its compliance claim to correct aim. Re-check aim after a leveling kit or lift too, because raising the front changes where the beam lands.
