About GEN-Y

GEN-Y started with Carl Borkholder, who ran a tree trimming business and was tired of swapping hitches between trailers. He welded receiver tubes together in his garage to make one adjustable hitch, friends and family asked for their own, and in 2012 he partnered with his friend Joel to turn it into a company. GEN-Y now designs and manufactures its products in Nappanee, Indiana, using American steel, and lists ISO 9001:2015 certification.

The product that sets GEN-Y apart is TORSION-FLEX, a patented design that adds rubber torsion arms between the shank and the ball so the truck and trailer can move a little independently instead of passing every jolt through a rigid hitch. GEN-Y says it absorbs up to 90 percent of the inertia between truck and trailer. The trade-off is a heavier, more expensive hitch than a plain drop mount, which makes most sense if you tow often or tow something that bucks.

What we carry from GEN-Y

From GEN-Y we carry adjustable drop hitches in the BOSS, MEGA-DUTY and PHANTOM families, with and without TORSION-FLEX, in 2 inch and 2.5 inch shank sizes, along with fifth wheel and gooseneck towing gear, hitch steps, pins, locks and replacement ball mounts. Receiver hitches fit by receiver size and rating rather than by model, so they work with any of the trucks we support that has a matching receiver, from Tacomas and Gladiators to F-150s and Ram 1500s. The fifth wheel and gooseneck pieces are aimed at the heavy-duty pickups we support: Ford Super Duty, Ram 2500-3500 and Silverado and Sierra HD.

How to choose

Match the shank to the receiver: Class IV hitches use a 2 inch shank and GEN-Y rates them up to 12,000 lb gross trailer weight and 1,000 lb tongue weight. Class V uses a 2.5 inch shank and is rated up to 18,000 lb with weight distribution. Your truck's receiver and its own tow rating set the real limit.

Measure your drop before ordering: With truck and trailer level, measure from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler and to the inside top of your receiver opening. The difference is the drop or rise you need; ordering the wrong drop is a return you pay shipping on.

TORSION-FLEX or standard: TORSION-FLEX is worth it if you tow often, tow heavy, or tow on rough roads, because it takes the shock out of the connection. For occasional light towing, a standard MEGA-DUTY adjustable hitch is simpler and lighter.

Stay under the lowest rating: GEN-Y's rule is that the load must stay below the lowest of your truck's rating and the hitch and ball ratings. Tongue weight generally belongs at 10 to 15 percent of trailer weight.

Keep the receipt: GEN-Y's lifetime warranty is for the original purchaser and asks for proof of purchase and the model number. Hold on to your NVMOS order confirmation.

Lead times & shipping

NVMOS dropships every GEN-Y order from the brand or its distributor. In-stock hitches usually leave in 1-3 business days, and items stocked at the manufacturer take about 1-2 weeks. Hitches are heavy, so smaller pieces go by UPS or FedEx Ground while larger fifth wheel and gooseneck gear may ship freight by truck. GEN-Y only accepts missing or damaged shipment claims reported within 48 hours of delivery, so open the box right away and note any freight damage on the delivery receipt before signing.

GEN-Y warranty

GEN-Y backs its hitches with a limited lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, and will repair or replace a failed hitch at its option. Coverage is for the original consumer purchaser only and ends if the hitch is sold or transferred. Based on GEN-Y's published warranty certificates, the warranty excludes normal wear and the finish, damage from abuse, neglect, misuse, accidents, overloading, improper installation or maintenance, alterations by anyone other than GEN-Y, failure to follow the user manual, failure of the vehicle or trailer the hitch is attached to, removal and reinstallation labor, and consequential losses like travel or lost time. GEN-Y also publishes a separate Lifetime Torsion Warranty for TORSION-FLEX products, and its FAQ mentions a lifetime TORSION-FLEX warranty offered on its website for $99; confirm with us what applies to your hitch.
