About AMP Research

AMP Research started as a one-man research and development shop for motocross parts, founded by Horst Leitner, and turned that background into vehicle steps and bed accessories. Its parent company, Lund International, was bought in 2019 by Truck Hero, now RealTruck. In 2022 AMP moved its 150 employees, production, offices and shipping from two buildings in Tustin and Fullerton into a single 104,000 square foot facility in Brea, California.

The PowerStep is the product AMP is known for: a motorized step that deploys when a door opens and tucks back against the rocker when the doors close. The BedStep is a frame-mounted step under the rear bumper that you flip down with your foot, so it still works with the tailgate open or a trailer hooked up, and the BedStep2 does the same job at the side of the bed. The BedXtender is a fold-out cage that extends the bed with the tailgate down.

What we carry from AMP Research

We carry PowerStep power running boards in the standard, Plug N Play, XL, Xtreme, Smart Series and Vision versions, plus the Smart Series DSM, along with wiring harnesses, OBD-II modules, replacement step assemblies, trim strips and extension brackets. For the bed we list the BedStep rear bumper step, the BedStep2 side bed step and BedXtender, BedXtender HD Sport and BedXtender HD Max bed extenders. There are also Wrangler JK fuel doors and an air tank relocation kit for Ram HD crew cabs. Fitment covers the Ram 1500 and HD trucks, F-150 and Super Duty, Silverado and Sierra, Colorado and Canyon, Tacoma, Tundra, Ranger, Wrangler JK and JL, Gladiator, Bronco and the Sprinter and Transit vans. Most AMP parts are specific to the cab, bed length and trim, so read the fitment notes before ordering.

How to choose

PowerStep or PowerStep XL: The XL version reaches farther out from the rocker than the standard PowerStep and is the usual pick on lifted trucks and Jeeps. On a stock-height truck the standard step is usually enough.

Plug N Play saves wiring: Plug N Play kits connect to the vehicle's OBD-II port for the door signal, so there is no splicing into door wiring. Older trucks without that support need a hardwired kit.

Watch the trim exclusions: Several PowerStep and BedStep listings include or exclude specific trims, such as the Wrangler 4xe and Rubicon 392 or certain Gladiator packages. Check those notes against your build sheet.

BedStep or BedStep2: The BedStep mounts under the rear bumper for climbing in over the tailgate. The BedStep2 mounts at the side of the bed for reaching gear near the cab.

Keep it on the original truck: AMP's warranty ends if the product is moved to another vehicle or the truck changes hands. If you plan to sell soon, factor that in.

Lead times & shipping

NVMOS dropships AMP Research orders from the brand or its distributor. In-stock parts usually leave in 1-3 business days, and parts stocked at the manufacturer take about 1-2 weeks. Harnesses, OBD-II modules, fuel doors and BedSteps ship by parcel carrier. PowerStep kits and BedXtenders come in long boxes and are heavier but usually still go by parcel. We send tracking as soon as it is issued.

AMP Research warranty

AMP Research's written warranty covers PowerStep models for five years or 60,000 miles and BedStep and BedXtender models for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the date of purchase. Coverage is for defects in material and workmanship, is limited to the original purchaser and ends if the product is removed from the original vehicle or the vehicle is sold. AMP repairs or replaces the part at its option and may substitute a current product if the original is discontinued; you pay any labor to remove or reinstall it. Misuse, abuse, accidents, improper installation, modification, poor maintenance and on-road or off-road hazards are excluded, as are incidental and consequential damages. Claims need proof of purchase, and nothing can be returned to AMP without prior authorization. Read our AMP Research warranty summary.

AMP Research FAQs

Is AMP Research part of RealTruck?

How long is the PowerStep warranty?

Five years or 60,000 miles from the date of purchase, whichever comes first, for the original purchaser.

How long is the BedStep and BedXtender warranty?

Three years or 36,000 miles from the date of purchase, whichever comes first.

Does the warranty transfer if I sell my truck?

No. AMP's warranty is limited to the original purchaser and expires if the vehicle is transferred or the product is moved to another vehicle.

Does the warranty pay for installation?

No. AMP repairs or replaces the defective part, but labor to remove or reinstall it is on the owner.
