The brake is a cone type built into the motor, and it engages automatically in both pull and reverse so the load holds without creeping. The free-spool lever is oversized and machined from 6061 aluminum, which makes it easy to work with gloves on. The unit is sealed to IP68 and runs through a 500A heavy-duty solenoid. It comes with 85 ft of line and a heavy-duty hook. Synthetic rope is lighter to handle than steel cable and stores less energy if it fails, which is why many people switch to it. The trade-off is that it needs a smooth fairlead and should be kept away from sharp edges and heat.
